BioWare: No SecuROM for Dragon Age: Origins

Dragon Age: Origins [http://www.bioware.com] will not use SecuROM or require online authentication to play.

BioWare Community Coordinator Chris Priestly said in a post on the Dragon Age: Origins forum that the game will feature only a "basic disk check" for copy protection, foregoing the more heavy-handed DRM methods that Mass Effect [http://www.ea.com] has something to do with it.

"We're happy to announce that the boxed/retail PC version of Dragon Age: Origins will use only a basic disk check and it will not require online authentication," SecuROM [http://daforums.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html?topic=677056&forum=135] in any version of Dragon Age that is distributed by EA or BioWare."

The choice was probably made easier by the fact that previous efforts at protecting games from piracy were dropping online authentication [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/87941] in favor of "disc-based copy protection."

Priestly also announced that the Dragon Age toolset beta has been launched, offering "developer-grade tools" that fans can use to modify and create their own content. "We'll also be supporting the game with a ton of great downloadable content that will be available for purchase after the game's release," he continued. "Together these features will provide some very cool reasons to go online with Dragon Age: Origins."

Dragon Age: Origins is slated for release later this year for the PC, PlayStation 3 [http://www.xbox.com].

Both Bioware AND EA? Huh, could this be the end of the age of software DRM?

One could hope so. Maybe they will go back to spending time making games and let the feds deal with the pirates.

How are they going to protect my legally-bought video game from myself? I can't be trusted to have complete, sole ownership of anything! I might, *gasp*, want to play it on future computers I buy!

O Bioware! Wherefore dost thy trust my goodly nature?

DRM stuff was the sole reason I didn't purchase Mass Effect for my computer. The only reason. This makes me much happier. If I am around my computer when it comes out, I'll most likely buy this game.

Mayhap they realize the extra money to do extra DRM is not worth the lost sales?

Way to go, Bioware! Good choice, I say. I just hope that it doesn't bite them in the ass. I love Bioware.

WOW. I wasn't expecting that.

Congrats BioWare ! Your off my "To Pirate" list! :D
Nope, not saying it's good to pirate EA, but give credits where credits is due. This is why I love BioWare more than bestheda, they never let me down with any of their games before. =D

The logical next step would be to strip this useless stuff off their back catalogue. After all, if someone wanted to pirate Mass Effect or Mirror's Edge, they would have done it a long time ago. And some people, yours truly included, might actually buy those games without the DRM.

It's about time. All that SecuROM stuff didn't really do much to stop piracy... it just made getting the game to work a pain in the ass.

This makes me very happy.
As I love BioWares games I'd probably gotten this anyways, but these news makes it a must-buy.

Let's hope the gaming community makes good with our promises to respect and purchase.
If DRM was the reason we didn't buy Spore, MassEffect etc than we should show devs that we'll gladly pony up the cash when they don't use it.

Provided the games are good, of course.

Finally they're coming to their minds...I honestly think keeping heavy DRMs will only draw more people into pirating games.I'm glad they came with a good decision.

You forgot the likes or Atari and since Blizard, Activision and Vivendi games joined together, with Vivendi and Activision, who can say what will happen with the up coming D3 and SC2. Though I wait and prey that they don't.
