Lair Dev Factor 5 Shuts Down

Rogue Squadron and Lair developer Factor 5 is officially closing the doors of its US branch, while the separate German division of the company will continue to operate.

"We are sorry to announce the closure of the San Rafael-based Factor 5, Inc. studio, but the obstacles created by the sudden bankruptcy of Brash Entertainment for the continuation of operations have turned out too great to overcome in the current economic climate," said CEO Achim Mollar in a message on the Factor 5 site [http://www.factor5.de/].

Brash Entertainment went bankrupt last November, at which point Brash dropped the Superman project they had with Factor 5. Superman seemed to have been keeping the developer on life support.

Factor 5's German studio is "entirely unrelated" to the situation over at the San Rafael, CA branch, and will continue operations as usual. "Although we are saddened by Factor 5 Inc's situation, our corporation will remain unaffected by these developments and has partnered with new and old friends in the industry who will reveal our upcoming projects over the next few months," Mollar said.

Factor 5 was best known for its Rogue Squadron games and most recently, Lair, a much-hyped PS3 game that bombed with critics and gamers alike.

"The current transition of the games industry is challenging, but as with transitions prior there is more opportunity than ever for independent development out there," Mollar concluded.

lol Brash entertainment. Man they were really bad... I mean really really bad. I was unfortunate enough to beta test one of their games. D:

As for Factor 5, I'm somewhat sad to see them go. Rogue Squadron was a great game.

No D:. Rogue Squadron was one of my favorite Star Wars games ever. Even though Lair was supposedly horrible, they deserved to make a Rogue sequel.
It had a sequel...Two in fact.

I'd say they started off on the wrong foot by naming their studio after a genetic disorder that raises the chances of blood clots.

I managed to enjoy Lair. I was surprised at how offended everyone was by it, but whatever. It is not a great game, but there's something there. The learning curve is a bit steep, and the motion controls are pretty unforgiving - if the wii-mote were this sensitive, the system would have, apparently, bombed.

A shame, but I'm amazed they survived Rogue Squadron III to be honest, Lair was just tempting fate.
rebel strike was kickass!!!! take that back right now!

sure it had it faults, but it included the entirety of rogue leader in 2 player co-op as well as graphics that would not be seen again until this generation and was generally just made of awesome

Oh I agree with you, the co-op rogue leader, two player modes, graphics and flying missions were excellent.

But this

Those bits were like taking an all you can eat Chinese buffet, then doing a piss in every dish, ruins everything. The speeder bike sections managed the impossible and were even worse. I really hope that whoever OK'd those bits lost their jobs over it, they were clearly total morons.

noooo!
sure the on-foot sections are annoying occasionally, but i liked them somewhat and if they were more of a traditional tps in terms of gameplay, they could easily be improved for a possible sequel - dont blame the designers, blame the programmers

as for the speeder bike sections, i also really liked them as a nice change of pace and it really captured the feel of going around 500 miles per hour
but i can see your complaints
my only complaint with it (aside from the fact that you never get to fight vader in lightsaber duel) was that one of wedge's missions was so impossibly hard and long that i rage quit his entire story!

either way, it was a decent game overall
