Family-Friendly MMO Free Realms Tops 1 Million Players

Less than one month after its official launch, Sony Online Entertainment has announced that its kid-friendly MMO Free Realms has surpassed the 1 million player mark.

It's almost certain that the game's meteoric rise has something to do with its enticing price tag. The game is both free to download and lacks the monthly subscription fee adopted by most big-budget massively multiplayer online games.

That said, the accomplishment is also an indication of the game's quality. I've played the game at various points in development over the past year and while I'm almost allergic to the saccharine sweet, vapid gameplay found in most child-oriented games, Free Realms surprisingly offers enough quality content to please both discerning parents and wide-eyed youngsters.

Plus, the game's graphics and scope easily rival any other MMO, short of years-old market leaders like World of Warcraft and EVE Online.

However, SOE has announced plans to cash in on the game using microtransactions and "premium content" at some unknown point in the future. It remains to be seen what form that might take, or whether that could slow the growth of Free Realms' playerbase.

I heard that Free Realms was coming to PS3? Either way I'll check it out sooner or later, I've been meaning to get into some kind of MMO for a while now.

Never judge a book by it's cover.

It's the reason there aren't many original games on the market, people take one look at something different and freak out.

Though I'm pretty sure you play as a fairy in this a game. A fairy who can be a ninja but still...

I'm sure the Penny-Arcade mention contributed at least a couple thousand to that million player milestone.

Free Realms is actually pretty cool. The mechanics are familiar, the presentation slick, and there's enough varied content that you'll certainly find SOMETHING to do. I've got around 8 hours of free gameplay out of it thus far, and though I'm not motivated to play again right now, it seems like it might be worth keeping tabs on. Especially considering it runs out of a browser.

Three important things for me:

A) It is great as a 'first MMO' for friends, relatives or GFs.
B) No end game and sporadic gameplay means it isn't addictive.
C) It feels like a Saturday morning cartoon, which are hotbeds for nostalgic escapism.

In my experience it's laggy, full of immature idiots and has hardly any actual gameplay beyond a bunch of minigames.

Also, since when is something free allowed to celebrate it's sales figures?
And why are any numbers in the hype period valid at all?
