PlayStation Home Users On The Rise

After an initial peak of interest followed by a dip in activity, PlayStation Home's active user base is now on the upswing, according to Home director Peter Edward.

PlayStation Home has had a reputation for being the biggest budgeted ghost town of all of gaming's virtual worlds, but that might not actually be the case, according to Home director Peter Edward. While the feature saw very little use after an initial surge of interest following its debut, people are apparently going back Home, and they're staying there.

"There's more and more content going in, there are more things to do, and people come back to have a look around - and then they realize there's loads of content," Edward explained. "We're at the point now where we're starting to see our active user base go up, and we're getting more people coming back than are leaving, so we're at the tipping point of where the platform starts to gain momentum."

While Edward understands why publishers and third parties have been skeptical about putting content into Home in the past, he believes things are now turning in the other direction. "I think once you've got third parties realizing that it has a positive effect, then they put more content on there, and you're at the point where you can be fairly confident you've got something that's working," he said.

PS3 owners, is it actually working? Have you gone back to Home and is there content compelling enough, beyond the Street Fighter IV costumes and silly dances, to make you stick around?

What is there to do there? I spent two minutes on it a while back, got bored as hell and went home.

It is...interesting but I still label HOME as a failure.

Why? Simple.....it is BORING AS HECK!!! The prices on the items are WAY overpriced and only fools would pay for them IMHO.

It was a nice try Sony....but HOME still needs LOADS of work put into it.

Sure it's interesting now that there are things to do there. The early days (when the beta opened) were annoying and bland. Annoying because it didn't work very well and bland because when it did work, all you could do was shop for a few items and decorate your place. I actually don't like taking part in betas. Give me the game when it works. People used to get paid for taking part in betas y'know. Another improvement: the virgins there aren't all quite as pathetic as they used to be when a girl enters the space.

I haven't been on Home since the day it was released. I guess I'll go back today and see what changes have been made. Seeing as how it's going to be a constantly updated thing I guess there's no harm in popping in one in a while.

It's all OK for those of us who like to view our console as a socialising tool, but how about the majority of us who really could care less about anything other than slotting a disc in the big shiny box and doing things we couldn't normally do in real life? Microsoft is just as guilty, but the Wii, surprisingly, is the one console that seems to have it right, with the Mii's just being a natural extension of what came before, rather than attempt to force a cartoon version of yourself down the nearest Halo 3 players throat. Christ, the Wii doesn't even before with a disc tray, you just the bastard in and getting gaming (though admittedly, there is nothing at the moment on Wii I would be able to force myself to do so bar ten or so games). It's not Home that's going to sell PS3's; it's a killer line up, and six or so exclusives just aren't enough to hold their previously dominating brand above the water. Priorities really do need to be adjusted.

I'd hardly call it a "failure" just because you think it's boring and also for the fact that it's just been released about 6 months ago. Give it time. If you say that HOME just needs a bunch of work, why put it off as a failure now when you yourself said that they need some work on it instead of giving up?

HOME has an enormous amount of potential, but for right now it does what it's supposed to be; chat with people online. It's just nice to walk around and just randomly talk with a random person and just chat with him/her and maybe even befriend them if you play the same games.

Make no mistake, HOME could definitely improve a hell of a lot. Much more content could be added and much more things can be done to add the interest to HOME and to go around in the spaces, but I am hopefully that HOME will continue to grow and improve.

I stick around because I want know how the "XI" event is going to end.
Xi did pique my interest , but it has got a lot better than when it started. Still doesn't live up to promises though, but i do like playing the odd game of chess with my buddies.

Wow. The "I hate Home because it's a Sony product and I hate Sony" people already got to this thread. Impressive.

I think this is a welcome bit of news. Home is an experiment, people. The fact that it's free and optional to download means that if you don't like it, then guess what? Don't download it!

That's the funny thing. People seem to think they have to download it and they have to spend money. Well, that's now how it works.

Good for the people who still use it, then. It never did anything for me, but if you like it, have fun with it.

You have misunderstood what I have said apparently.

I was not the first one to call it a failure.....however I do agree TO AN EXTENT that it IS a failure in some ways. They are taking out features that were promised and for bad reasons....and the servers are still unstable. The content is boring and does not change that much at all ( vid games are a prime example ) and the prices....good lordie they are WAY too high.

Yes it needs a HUGE amount of work still...and I agree that it has potential but for now it is just...well...BORING.

Third-party developers have stepped up to make HOME a worthwhile experience, namely EA with its sports complex. Their virtual Texas Hold-Em game is outstanding: Online poker, leaderboards, a high-rollers table, and bracelets awarded for winning to show off your poker-playing prowess. Buzz Quiz TV's HOME space shows similar appeal. If more and more developers take note, HOME will be a smashing success.

I'm still waiting for SONY to deliver on its initial promises though... when can I add a stereo, picture frames, and televisions to my personal space so that I can show off my music, pics, and vids to friends? And when can I buy a pool table or arcade game to add to my personal space? Once this all happens, I might never leave HOME.

Bottom line, if you haven't been in HOME and toured all the spaces yet, you are really missing out.

It makes me sad that the avatars in HOME can dance better than I can.

I use it on occasion, if I'm really bored. But it's not that bad, just needs a lot more work to make it something special.

I played this at a friends house last weekend and kind of liked it. It looks magnificent. I like the music and its fun to do in between playing games and with a little chance you get to expand your friends list a bit.

Now I just to get my PS3 online because I still havent managed to do that...
