3D Realms "Remasters" the Classics in Major Store Update

3D Realms is working on a major update to its Online Store [http://3drealms.stores.yahoo.net/] which will include a "remastering" of its complete product line and a digital release of games that were previously only available on CD.

The updates will give people a chance to buy and play virtually every game in 3D Realm's catalog that hasn't already been released as freeware, former 3D Realms employee Joe Sielger said, ranging from DOSBox [http://www.3drealms.com/keen1/index.html] wrappers and will include PDF versions of the manuals and, where available, hint sheets.

"For the last two days I worked at 3DR, I did nothing more than one final major remaster of the product line. I took all the files that we were selling as downloadable items and remastered them," he wrote in the Death Rally [http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/showthread.php?t=35802], & Terminal Velocity. So these games will be available in our store."

"I also hit some other games. We will be selling Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project [http://www.3drealms.com/dukemp/index.html] as a download for the first time, and we will also be selling something we have not sold in several years now. BALLS OF STEEL!" he continued. "This is basically every game that we can still sell that hasn't been released as freeware. They'll all be available in the new store update that is coming."

Also included in the update will be a version of Rise of the Triad [http://www.3drealms.com/rott/index.html] that will come with "every single stinkin' thing that Apogee ever released" for the game, along with a bunch of user-created content and a few "surprises" Siegler tossed in on his own. "Redoing the product line with a DOSBox wrapper, as well as bringing back and/or adding several things to the online store was my final act as an actual employee of 3DR," he wrote. "I saved ROTT for last. It was mastered between about 6:40PM and 8:15PM Central time on Friday May 22nd."

The full list of games coming to the new 3D Realms store:

Balls of Steel
Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold
Commander Keen Galaxy
Commander Keen Vorticons
Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure
Crystal Caves
Death Rally
Duke Nukem
Duke Nukem II
Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition
Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project
Hocus Pocus
Math Rescue
Monster Bash
Mystic Towers
Paganitzu
Planet Strike
Raptor: Call of the Shadows
Realms of Chaos
Rise of the Triad (or as I call it, Ultimate ROTT)
Secret Agent
Shadow Warrior
Terminal Velocity
Wacky Wheels
Wolfenstein 3D
Word Rescue

So even though you can't play Duke Nukem Forever, you'll still be able to fire up some Duke Nukem 3D and that's not a bad second choice. Pricing and a launch date for the new store have not yet been revealed, so keep an eye on 3D Realms [http://www.3drealms.com] for updates.

Nice to see 3d Realms have been doing SOMETHING with their time other than flicking elastic bands around the office.

Classics are great.

I thought 3D realms has closed?
Same here. Maybe the studio is partly open under the administrators? And they are trying to earn the money to pay the huge lawsuit leveled against them?

But what is so special about that?

GOG has quite a few of these titles for some time, downloadable, some running on DOSBox, coming with additional art/documentation/soundtrack...

I don't see what's so novel about that...

I think I'll have to pick up a copy of Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure. Damn shareware. I've been on a cliffhanger for fourteen years.

Wait, 3d realms made raptor? I loved that game.
3D Realms used to be Apogee, so all their games would be included (that they developed anyways.)

And 3D Realms did not get shut down. The development team for DNF was let go. The company was made up of more than just those employees.

While I am always a proponent and eternal fan of the classic games, I have to ask...

If this is just the same old game, with a built in DOSbox launcher, why wouldn't I just continue to play my original CD copies through DOSbox like I already do?

That being said, I lost my copy of Raptor, and would probably spend the money to get it back.
As with the Wii Virtual Console I see it mostly as a way to get the games you didn't back then. Sure, there's no point in buying games you already have again but many of us didn't have them back in the day (or at least not more than the shareware version).

Do they really think that they can make a big profit by reselling all these extremely old games?

Yes. And they might.
I myself definitely enjoy a good classic now and then: Fallout, Stonekeep, ... But I wonder what the difference will be between the newly released games, and the ones available on GOG.com [http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/rise_of_the_triad__dark_war] for instance, where you can buy a WinXP-compatible Rise of the Triad for $5.99 (4.29 euro). That's where I got my Fallout 1 and 2 back.
