Nintendo Wants To "Win Over the Halo Audience"

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime says he believes that despite the Halo [http://www.wii.com] audience" with its upcoming slate of games.

Nintendo [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/92123] currently all but owns. But rather than worrying about how the Wii will hold up to competition from more advanced consoles and controllers, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime revealed that the company is setting its sights elsewhere: On the core gamer.

"We think we [can] win over the Halo audience with something like Wii Fit Plus [http://www.conduitgame.com/index_uk.html]."

"The near-term opportunity is the consumer who owns a Wii Motion Plus [http://www.playstation.com] and Wii Fit Plus and [the] new Super Mario Bros. Wii will hopefully achieve. And the long-term opportunity is that person who currently says, 'I don't play video games and I have no interest in playing video games'."

He admitted that as Nintendo moves deeper into the gamer demographic, the challenges facing the company grow more difficult. "Two years ago, theoretically, there were ten consumers who said, 'I would never play video games.' We picked them off one at a time with Brain Age 2 [http://www.nintendo.com/wiifit/]," he said. "Now maybe there's five left, but now the bar is substantially higher for how to get them. Which is why we're looking to push the envelope with something like the Vitality Sensor, and why we have to make current gamers say, 'Huh? What is that?' But that's exactly the type of reaction we got a couple of years ago when we first talked about Wii Fit, and look where we are now."

That's a good one the wii the very symbol of casual gaming wants to be loved by the hardcore(or not depends if halo players consider themselves hardcore). Also, what makes them think the halo fans would have a wii?

The most logical choice. >_>

Also, the Wii is for younger/older people, Halo is about guns and bloodshed, anyone else seeing a little clashing? I think the Wii people are getting cocky.

Oh god...I think that was my spleen again...
Honestly, that is one of the last things I'd ever want to see.
Honestly, I don't see myself caring about Nintendo anymore. All the attention and respect I used to have for them was lost completely when they released Wii Music.
So I'll just have to say...no, thanks for playing, and I might see you next time.
EDIT: Wow, way to go, JT! You got quoted 4 times!

Was the vitality sensor part of this plan? I don't think Nintendo realizes that as of a few years ago, they already had the core gamer as part of their audience.

... Wow... out of all the companies, I never thought I'd see Nintendo make such a sweeping generalization of a group of gamers o_O

Their PR is getting worse by the day.

Unless Conduit has a flawless, previously unseen on the Wii online multiplayer service, Nintendo have seriously under estimated their market.

So apparently they expect someone who owns Halo, to get a Wii for Dead Space? Theres a better version on the 360, and the Wii's online is buggy at best, so good luck Reggie.

It will take a a very special game to convince people to buy the console just for that one game. Plus, it would have to offer something significantly different to the games you can get on 360, and, more importantly, the game in question would have to be significantly better. I can't speak for The Conduit, but I doubt Dead Space: Extraction is going to be that game.

Frankly, I think Nintendo should just focus on the market they already have cornered. They could make a little more money by trying to branch out into the core gamer market, but the casual gamer market has already proved that the Wii basically prints money. It seems their main motivation here is the money anyway, as they said they expect the people who bought a Wii for The Conduit to then buy Mario Kart and Wii Fit.

If money is what they're mainly concerned with (and who could blame them), they will do a lot better by focusing on their established market. They basically own it already; it's theirs to exploit now.

Well, at least theyre optimistic...a bit delusional, but optimistic. Nintendo, know your audience: whiny 5-10 year olds. Keep placing Mario in unique situations ( underwater, on the moon, Iraq) and you'll keep the yen flowing.

They should just focus on the audience that they're with now, because if they don't try anything drastic, it shouldn't get any worse

The fact Halo is successful is because of it's popular online mode. And the online system on the Wii is just too counter-intuitive. All the codes etc are just too awkward. Whereas on the 360 and PS3 you just send an invite to someone by pressing a button. And nintendo's online mode is usually laggy...

Bwahahaha! Right, I see that that happening. Mario Kart, there's a very (very) slim chance. Wii Fit Plus, not so much.
