Pwning Noobs Helps Your Vision

According to a new study, violent shoot 'em up games can drastically increase your perception of fine contrast differences.

In the study - which already sounds great - 22 gamers were split into two groups. One set played Unreal Tournament 2004 and Call of Duty 2, while the other half played The Sims 2.

The study checked back in on the same gamers after 9 weeks, with the players having completed 50 hours a week in their assigned fields. The first group showed an average of 43% increase in discerning the difference between shades of gray. The Sims players, on the other hand, were apparently too busy deciding what wallpapers to have, and scored similarly to non-gamers.

The ability to discern slight differences in shades of gray, or contrast sensitivity, is the primary limiting factor in how well one sees, according to Daphne Bavelier, a professor of brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester in England.

She explained the significance by saying, "If you are driving at dusk with light fog it could make the difference between seeing the car in front of you or not seeing it." For those "hardcore" gamers, who play the games for six months or more, the increase can be as high as 58%.

Those of us that have been playing Team Fortress 2 and CoD4 have probably already seen the Tyrannosaurus coming up the street.

That was the first thing I saw prior to even reading the article, does go to show though that it does help in some cases.

I was busy looking at the trashcan, now I see it. Got to say, shooters have made me more aware of the environment and really helps me notice things out of the corner of my eye.

Wow, that T-rex really snuck up on me. Maybe it's a spy disguised as a T-rex who has just uncloaked? I honestly didn't see it until after I looked at the trashcan for a solid minute. And that, children, is why I never play as an engineer if I can help it.

I just barely scanned the picture, and didn't see it until it was mentioned. That gives me an excuse to play more videogames.

I saw it but I thought it was a goddamn tree. It was only when I concentrated that I could see that it is a T-Rex.

I do find it ironic that whenever there's a study that says there's any problems caused by gaming, it gets lamblasted into next week. But as soon as there's a study that suggests there's something positive about games, not a word is uttered. This study isn't really any more credible than all the other studies we decry on a regular basis.

Just saying...

Edit: Also, at first I thought the thing in the mist was a Maddog from Mechwarrior, it wasn't until I read the part about "T-Rex" that I could see it.

Of course they help your eye-to-hand aim. That's what a skill in the game is.

I only thought that playing shooters would make me scan rooms quickly and walk faster, but now I guess I can add 'sees clearer' to the list.

This begs the question, if shooting things in CoD 4 improves your sight, does tea bagging improve your sex life?

BTW, honestly didn't see the T-rex till you mentioned it. I found the bin much more extraordinary.
