Serious Sam Coming to Xbox Live Arcade

Croteam [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serious_Sam], will be blasting its way to the Xbox Live Arcade this summer. Seriously.

The game is being updated and retooled for the XBLA and will be released as Serious Sam: The First Encounter HD. It will feature 12 levels of ridiculously frenetic action set in a gorgeously-rendered hi-definition Egyptian desert, with support for four-player co-op action. "We are really excited to update our hero and recreate Sam in stunning high definition for Xbox Live Arcade players," said Croatem CEO Roman Ribaric. "The fans have lobbied us hard to do this, so we are stoked about bringing Sam back as big, bold and bad as he ever was."

Serious Sam: The First Encounter made a big splash when it was released for the PC in 2001, earning immediate acclaim among FPS fans for its massive, sprawling levels, endless hordes of enemies and some of the most over-the-top action ever seen in a videogame. It looked pretty fantastic in its day, too, but the visuals in the updated XBLA release far exceed that of the original.

Serious Sam: The First Encounter HD will be released in late summer for 1200 Microsoft points and if it's anything like the original, will be well worth each and every one of them. Sam fans know what I'm talking about and if you don't, this is a perfect opportunity to find out. Seriously.

It's too bad that Serious Sam 2 sucked so bad, because The First and Second Encounters were frikkin' awesome. I don't shamelessly pimp too many games but seriously (did it again!), if you're a 360 owner, get this game.

Nice, I see what you did there ;)

I wonder if it will have competative multiplayer

Well, I like mindless killing mixed with shooty fun (DOOM / Duke Nukem). So I guess that this is right up my alley!

I'll be grabbing it when it comes out.

Serious Sam was a truly awesome game. I preferred Duke Nukem though. Duke Nukem were like the Beatles of FPS whereas Serious Sam was like the Michael Jackson of FPS. Not saying that Serious Sam was worse, just a little different.

Well, if Microsoft/People Can Fly can get Painkiller onto XBL, I will sell my soul to Microsoft, for you see, I am a fan of mindless shooting things/guns that shoot cool stuff.

Am I the only one pissed about the 4-player limit on co-op? The best part of the original was that you could have teams of like 8 or so people all co-oping at the same time.

And you'd STILL be horribly outnumbered. The game increased the number of enemy spawns proportionally to the number of co-oping players.

Maybe the xbox360 can not handle that type of spawning for more than 4 people co-op playing.

An HD version of this game will be a great buy.

If XBLA was a beautiful woman, I'd kiss it right about now!

Hell, even if XBLA was a fat, ugly, balding man with leprosy, I'd still give it a kiss! Serious Sam is just THAT awesome!

To beat a dead horse, I'll seriously be buying this, seriously. I've been playing through the second encounter again, and it's still damn fun. I'd rather they'd remake second encounter because getting out of the desert was nice, but I'll always support Croteam, and Serious Sam 1 was a great game. Great action, excessive weaponry, great graphics for its time, huge levels, and great humour. Plus the sound of the headless bombers still haunts me at night. Some of the funnest games that have come out in the last 8 years. Seriously.

In an era where Goldeneye had just come out and everyone was making their "Me Too!" games with story-heavy FPS titles, Serious Sam was a breath of fresh air for the genre by letting us get back to the "If it moves, just fuck'n shoot it" style of gameplay. The fact that it was also challenging and had a variety of interesting weapons was just icing on the cake.

It was just an awesome game. Seriously.

This is the first game I've ever wanted on a platform I don't own.

Ever.

Very literally.

Ever.
