Bethesda Releases Daggerfall For Free

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of The Elder Scrolls franchise, Bethesda is releasing the second game in the series, Daggerfall, for free.

If you've never tried any of the Elder Scrolls games before Morrowind or - you can admit it, I won't revoke your gamer cred - before Oblivion, today's your lucky day to experience some Bethesda history in the free and legal way. To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the series and "despite saying we'd never do it," the company has download [http://bethblog.com/index.php/2009/07/09/daggerfall-now-available-for-free/].

There are no strings attached here, and Bethesda's only being consistent: the developer did the same thing five years ago for The Elder Scrolls' 10th anniversary when they released The Elder Scrolls: Arena for free. But Daggerfall does come with a few warnings.

This game came out in 1996, which means that it's not exactly the prettiest looking thing out there, though it's certainly not without its retro charm. That's not really the issue, though. Bethesda is releasing the game as it is, and they're not going to tinker with the game to make sure it runs compatibly with modern operating systems. They don't have plans to support the release with any customer support either (though I'm sure you'll find people in the Elder Scrolls community to be helpful if you need it).

So, you need to run the game in detailed instructions [http://www.dosbox.com/] Bethesda's Mike Mazzuca put together for installing and running the game. So yeah, if you're new to this kind of thing, you'll have to put in a little work to get Daggerfall to run (you might also have to wait, because for some reason Bethesda's servers are being awful slow coughing out the 150 MB download). But if all those curmudgeonly old school Elder Scrolls fans are right, it should be worth it.

I remember when they released Arena, though I never downloaded it. Now I can download both and just relish in the fantastic games of yore.

This is one of the best RPGs I have ever played. Definitely the largest scale I've ever seen.

I'm serious. <img src="http://www.cyrodiil.net/assets/iliacbay.jpg" /img>

You can go to pretty much every region, and each region has hundreds of specific areas to go to. Towns, dungeons, etc.

Like this. Each dot on this picture represents a place you can go on the map.
And this is just one province.

I figured this was abandonware already because it was no longer sold or supported.

I remember this game having an epic install time. And because it was 148mb it took up 1/10th of my 1G hard drive. Good times.

I don't know how to work DOSBox D:

EDIT: Figured out how to work it. Won't let me run Arena. (Daggerfall didn't download right so I went with Arena.) Oh yeah, I have a Mac. Help would be appreciated~

That's one character creation tool that I really miss.

Some perks that I hadn't seen before:
-Damage from holy places (or from the sun! Yay, stay inside half the game)
-Magic absorption
-Allergy to silver
-Phobia to harpies
-Critical weakness to paralysis

And each negative "perk" would give you extra points to pick positive perks such as:

-Acute hearing (I love that one)
-Increased healing in water
-Bonus to hit daedra
-Adrenaline rush
-Immunity to disease
-Resistance to shock

I think someone walked from one end of the game world to the other, and it ended up taking about 1 week, not in game, 1 real life week.

Not sure if thats nonestop or off and on, but still, its a big ass game world

Yippee! I've been wanting to get this for ages but I don't trust Amazon. Kudos to Bethesda!
