Don't Hold Your Breath for Elder Scrolls News

Bethesda announced the free release [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93046-Bethesda-Releases-Daggerfall-For-Free] of the classic RPG epic The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall yesterday to mark the 15th anniversary of the famed franchise. Hines, Bethesda's vice president of public relations, admitted he was a little surprised by the move at first but cautioned gamers not to see the giveaway as anything more than it is: A gift to fans for making the series so successful.

"Honestly, I never thought we'd release Daggerfall for free," he said. "It was really Todd Howard's idea. He was the one that pointed out it was the 15th anniversary of The Elder Scrolls, and we should do something. He thought we should do Daggerfall, so we did."

"It's a celebration of a great milestone for a great series, nothing more," he added. "Holding your breath for news would be unwise."

Bethesda has a lot on its plate these days and with action on the id Software [http://fallout.bethsoft.com] fronts, its attention is clearly focused elsewhere. Or is it? Is it possible that Hines is using the ol' reverse psychology trick, telling us Bethesda has no intention of announcing any "news" about The Elder Scrolls when in fact a major project detailing the opening years of the Fourth Era of Tamriel is brewing at this very moment?

That'd be a lot of trouble to keep something hidden from the public. But since its Bethesda, I don't think they need much marketing during the development, or pre-release.

Honestly, Fallout 3 seemed kind of like an Elder Scrolls V, inasmuch as it felt like Oblivion except with better graphics and a lot of issues (bugs, ugly faces, bad voice acting, lack of immersion) fixed.

But anyway, I could've sworn that Bethesda had made an announcement that TESV would come out in 2010...

The headline of this story petrified me. I wasn't gonna think anything deeply of the Daggerfall free release and I didn't take into account that some people might. I think I migt be blabbering. The point is, I thought this was gonna be an announcement to NEVER expect anything.

Elder Scrolls V will be awesome.... whenever it actually comes out.

I wonder where the next Elder Scrolls game would take place. With all the complaints about Oblivion being a too standard LOTR-style fantasy setting, I suspect the next release will be in a more exotic setting again, akin to Morrowind. It won't be easy living up to the expectations though, which seem to soar even higher with every Bethesda release.

It's not really accurate to describe the Brink and id fronts as taking resources away from Bethesda, since Brink's being developed by Splash Damage and only published by Bethesda Softworks/ZeniMax, while id is...well...id. The $64,000 question is what Bethesda Game Studios, developer of Morrowind, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 is up to. Do they have a dedicated Elder Scrolls team working on TESV? Is there a second team within the studio doing Fallout 4 or Fallout MMO? That's what I want to know, but short of having Slugworth and Schicklgruber sending industrial spies into Bethesda's studios, we'll never know.

It dosnt look like there making another one, as far as i can tell what were looking at is the begining of a posible remake franchise were there just going to re-release the originals with upgraded graphics. Its just a thought, a free release just seems to be a highly unusual move even if its an old game.
