FCC Chairman Vows to Support Net Neutrality

We can all breathe a sigh of relief, as it looks like the current FCC chairman will be strongly backing net neutrality

Julius Genachowski, President Obama's recent appointment to FCC chairman, has made it very clear that the agency will be supporting net neutrality. Net neutrality, explained here [http://www.google.com/help/netneutrality.html], is basically the principal that all Internet access should be created equal. For example, if net neutrality were not enforced, an ISP would have the ability to throttle bandwidth for certain content, or to charge for access to that specific content.

Genachowski stated: "One thing I would say so that there is no confusion out there is that this FCC will support net neutrality and will enforce any violation of net neutrality principles." There can't really be any confusion there. Even though Comcast is taking it to the FCC with a recent lawsuit over penalties it imposed on the cable giant for bandwidth throttling related to its' consumers BitTorrent usage, the FCC chairman does not appear to be willing to back down.

A bill supporting net neutrality was recently introduced into the House of Representatives [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93592-Third-Time-the-Charm-for-Net-Neutrality], and though Genachowski would not offer an opinion on this bill, he did say that his job is to provide Congress with the proper facts and data that they need to make the right decisions. Not only that, but Genachowski said he would make sure to "speak up" if he doesn't feel he has enough authority on the net neutrality issue. Sounds like a regular prince to me. This is an extremely important issue and we need the right people in the right positions to make sure net neutrality is enforced.

This is a very good thing indeed.

Last thing we need is to pay more because we play more games or use certain ports.

Wait.. I thought net neutrality was supposed to do the opposite of what this article is talking about?! I heard they were going to make 'all isps equal' by making them all charge the same 'fee' for various content, Aka you could get charged a higher monthly bill becuase you watched 'porn' instead of 'Americas got Talent'.

Thats the way I understood it from a few years back, not a 'all content will be charged at the same price' <_<

Course if this stops my ISP from bottlenecking my Down speed because I uploaded more then 10KBS of data in an hour....

Whew, the net is safe for a little longer... but the corporate lobbyists are slowly getting stronger. THey need to make it something permanent so the next guy can't sell it and us out to those greedy bastards.

not enough people know or care about this :(

This can only be seen as a good thing, I think. Hopefully Genachowski actually follows through with that statement.

Still, it's hard to explain to Senators (a bunch of old white men) what the hell net neutrality is. I support the FCC Chair in his efforts, but frankly, they've got very little teeth left to them after the last 8 years. Maybe they'll get some dentures.

wells seems like Obama picked some smart people for his cabinet jobs.

i'd really hate to see the past 8 years be repeated and the gov only listens to big business and the bribes they give lobbying they do

Isn't that what Republicans usually do?

At least your techies are smart, America.
Now, your media outlets need some work...
And here we have our arbitrary snide anti-American post.

On topic...yes this is a very good thing.

I do not trust what this guy is saying. Nothing the FCC has ever done has been good and they've become increasingly dishonest.

He may say one thing, and indeed, it may be neutral, but the end result might be something worse than limited bandwith on certain sites.

Really, it's more of an anti-CNN post, but whatever.
Sorry for overreacting, it just seems that everyone and their half-sister goes nuts with senseless U.S. bashing on this forum.
It's starting to get extremely cliche.

meh... I'll believe when I see it. The day the FCC actually follows through on what it says is the day I eat my own foot, photograph the stump, and post it on 4chan (which is it say: never, for those of you that don't understand sarcasm).

The day the FCC gets disbanded, is the day I hit the town and get plastered. (For me, its not something I do. Ever.)
