Kurt Cobain Comes to Guitar Hero 5

Former Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain will appear in a videogame for the first time ever as part of Guitar Hero 5 [http://gh5.guitarhero.com/], which will feature two of the band's most popular hits.

Cobain will be featured as a playable character in the latest addition to the Guitar Hero franchise, which will include two tracks from the 1991 album Nevermind: The smash hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and a previously unreleased live recording of "Lithium."

"Kurt Cobain is one of the most recognizable frontmen in rock 'n' roll history and it's an honor to have two of Nirvana's masterpieces included in Guitar Hero 5," said Activision Vice President of Music Affairs Tim Riley. "This is the first time the original recording of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' has ever been licensed in an entertainment property and we're thrilled to offer Guitar Hero fans exclusive access to the unreleased live version of 'Lithium'."

Other acts included with Guitar Hero 5 range from greats like The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash to Kings of Leon and Vampire Weekend. The game will also feature new game modes including "Party Play," which lets players join in and leave game sessions seamlessly, and "Rock Fest," which features five new head-to-head modes available locally or online.

Cobain formed Nirvana in 1987 with bassist Krist Novoselic, running through a series of drummers before settling on Dave Grohl in 1990. The band's breakthrough came with the release of the hugely successful Nevermind, but the pressures of stardom, exacerbated by a long history of drug abuse, eventually became too much for him to handle, leading him to take his own life [http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2009/4/22/] in April 1994.

This is old news to me, but then I spend far too much of my life following these plastic guitar games. There's a lot of outrage over the fact that they've apparently mo-capped him playing guitar right-handed.

EDIT: Okay, so apparently he plays left-handed on the Nirvana tracks, but defaults to the same right-handed animations as all the other characters for other songs.

While I'm a huge fan of Nirvana, I find this news to be really...ironic. Isn't this the kind of commercialism that Kurt Cobain absolutely despised? Hell, I bet if he came back to life and saw someone playing as him in this game, he'd blow his head off all over again!

What next? Are they going to let us play as Che Guevara?

This is the person who killed himself because he was afraid of his music becoming to mainstream and feeding the corporate machine. Now he is in a Guitar Hero game. No one sees any problems here?!

This thread will probably end up turning into a debate regarding whether or not Cobain actually killed himself...

Of course he didn't, he lives in an underground bunker with Jimmy Hoffa and Elvis, although the place hasn't been the same since Hitler moved out. [/sarcasm]

Is this the Che Guevara t-shirts all over again? Either way I'm slightly amused.

Who did they ask to use his likeness in Guitar Hero? Courtney Love?
Probably. Wasn't there a similar article yesterday?

Edit: Oh, guess so.
If thats true then no wonder, I bet she'd do anything for a bit of money in the name of Kurt Cobain

Yeah...I'm gonna be 'that guy'
With the number of posts you have to your name I would think that you'd already know this, but a great number of our readers don't wander into other forums, so one-line links to other announcements don't provide them any real service. Nor do "ha ha community wins again" posts like this one. The urge to be "that guy" would really be better ignored in the future.

I love Nirvana. although considering the popular theory is he killed himself since his music was becoming too commercial (or part of corporate America) I can't help but think this is a very bad move in rather poor taste.

More importantly where's my Dylan avatar!

Unproven theory none-the-less. Also is this the worst picture they could've used for Kurt Cobain in this article? He looks like an emo with all that eye-liner.

I would pre-order that game so fast it would boggle your mind.
