All Points Bulletin Trailer: Now With Gameplay

We've seen All Points Bulletin's ridiculous character creator, and we've seen a trailer made from entirely in-game footage, but now we get a first look at the actual gameplay of Realtime Worlds' cops-and-robbers MMOG.

[gamespot=6228651]

The more I see about APB, the more I look forward to it. It's an open world crime game in the vein of Grand Theft Auto, developed by the team behind the original Crackdown, and with absolutely absurd amounts of character customization (as character creator [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/conferences/e3_2009/6193-The-MMOGs-of-E3] is one of the coolest things I've seen in a while, with the developers taking great pains to ensure that no matter how much you mess with the sliders, the result will always be recognizably human.

It might look cool, but how does the gameplay shape up? If this trailer is any indication, it's looking pretty cool. Yes, essentially it's Grand Theft Auto in MMOG form, with guns, cars, and real-time combat that seems more twitch-based than stats-based. Rather than buffing your stats to get lethal critical hits on your opponent, why not just run them over with a truck?

Of course, as with any MMOG, it looks like there's a /dance command. It goes without saying that /dance is the best part of any MMO, so it's nice to see that Realtime Worlds is keeping with the program.

APB is scheduled to hit Q1 of next year, along with everything else.

This is pretty much what I'm thinking.
Release it for all the platforms, make it online only, and let's have a ball.

If there isn't a monthly fee, I'll be all over this. I'd probably spend way too much time in the character creator, though!

Me too. Theres so much you can do with it. I'd spend most of my time just making my character.

Yay! It looks like GTA IV and Crackdown mixed together, graphically speaking. And just plain awesome gameplay-wise.

The FAQ on the APB website - APB.com, says "The price and payment model have not been finalized yet but we can say it won't be the traditional monthly subscription model".

That sounds promising, though I can't imagine what a untraditional subscription model would be.

You can also sign up for the beta on the website, which certainly seems worth doing judging by that video.

I know signing up isn't a guarantee of being chosen, but it's still better than not filling out the simple application form and having zero chance.

Microtransactions, perhaps. Or a "tiered" subscription model, with free-to-play and then a cheaper "premium" subscription for access to extra stuff. Those would be some of the more popular non-traditional ones.

I can see it now:

*police sirens*
"Oh shit, I pulled aggro."
"Where's the tank?"
"We never jacked one."
"Fuck, wipe."

That game looks brilliant, like GTA multiplayer done properly... And if it's not done with monthly payments then that's all the better.

I once said the only MMO i'd consider paying for was the KOTOR one. I completely forgot about this game and I'm taking that statement back. This and Old Republic are the only two MMOs I'd consider paying MMO prices for, which in the case of APB I might not even have to, which would be nice/interesting.

My only concern is that the customization options for the police will be limited compared to the criminal side. Unless we can get options for guys who clearly look like police but are dressed in somewhat plainclothes attire or you can customize the appearance of your police gear in an insanely detailed manner.

I'm almost positive the "police" will be more like glorified vigilantes, and will have all of the customization options available to the criminals. Could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure this is how it'll work.

It's the only way it can work. Otherwise, everyones gonna go join the criminal side.

So I expect the police side to have generous customizations as well. (plus in the trailer, you can see a souped up police cruiser jettisoning out of the station...)

That looks awesome, and that trailer is making me look more and more forward to that game. This is on my list of buy games for next year.

But, on a random note, anyone know the name of the song in that trailer? It sounds nice.

Why is everyone so against subscription? Sure paying to play the game is kinda suck, but I find it brings a level of stability and quality to the product- Subscription games do best when more people are playing, Microtransacts are doing best when people are buying their shit. Ergo, there is an obvious pressure to make more content for people to buy shit. Hence why I believe Microtransactions work only as a sideline to a Subscription model.

Holy shit that looks like fun. I always found the most fun on GTA IV multiplayer was running people over with a car (or even worse, one of those really slow airport carts, extremley funny!) but that cars were hella hard to control in GTA. Hopefully APB corrects this.

I think that Guild Wars would seem to indicate that non-traditional subscription models like micro-transactions can actually work, given the chance. In fact, I'm pretty sure that one of the main reasons that GW ever succeeded WAS the lack of monthly payments.

There's a HUGE market for MMOS out there that remains untapped due to the hate for the monthly subscription, and if these guys build up enough publicity(and make a good game), I think that this game might very well crush a good deal of subscription MMOS.
