Monkey Island 2 Environments Recreated Using CryEngine

The Monkey Island series may have already taken the leap to 3D, but not quite like this.

Artist Hannes Appell posted two videos on YouTube recently here [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPaH8oIJd7g] demonstrating a technique to accurately recreate a 2D scene from Monkey Island 2 in 3D using basic camera projection. He has now posted a new video, shown here, of those environments and more dropped into the CryEngine Sandbox editor.

Though the technique is probably not quite as easy as the videos make it appear to be, it is quite amazing anyway. 2D concept art is projected onto 3D geometry, rather than repainting the background art. The environments were built in Maya, refined for real-time use, and exported to the CryEngine Sandbox editor.

But, Monkey Island 2's environments weren't just recreated here, Appell also demonstrates a real character existing within them. Though the character is generic, it could easily be skinned to look like everyone's favorite Threepwood. The character is shown picking up various objects, such as bananas, oranges, and chickens, and using them to interact with the environment. I would probably stop feeding bananas to El Pollo Diablo, though.

Wow, that's very impressive. It stills seems to have that fantastic atmosphere as well, very impressive.

Theoretically, if I hammer the 5 star button for an infinite amount of time, the video will have infinite stars.

Here goes.

This is muuuuuch better then the episodic 3d iterations of the game currently (not really sure I like the current art style)

But I prefer the classic / newly updated art of new secret of monkey island, just has more of a charm and feel to it I think.

Damn that's just crazy good! Only problem is that if I remember correctly you only need a massive computer or Cylon Basestar to run this on the really high settings.

Naah. I can run the game on low settings on my netbook. If a netbook can run it decently on low, a decent desktop can run it on high.

Ah I see, well computers aren't really my strong point so I'm a little behind the times I guess.

I feel a little turned on after watching that, actually.
That, and I feel an urge to actually try to play Crysis. Oh, except my computer would EXPLODE from that.
