Left 4 Dead: A Box Art Retrospective

Ever think about what makes really good game box art? Of course you don't, but Valve [http://www.valvesoftware.com] does and as a new entry on the Left 4 Dead blog shows, a great cover design takes a lot of work.

Making a great game doesn't mean much if people don't buy it and with the huge number of new titles hitting the shelves every week, standing out from the crowd is vital. Covers have to be eye-catching and they have to "sell" the game quickly, or at least generate enough interest that prospective customers will flip over to the back to see what's going on. Some boxes do it better than others but few are as instantly iconic as that of Valve's Left 4 Dead.

Getting there wasn't easy. Initial designs focused on the game's characters but ensuring that none of the four appeared more prominent than the others meant making them small, which reduced the impact of the image. Adding zombies to the mix only exacerbated the problem, shrinking the characters further and adding to the "noise."

Valve's initial choices of color palette - red, black and white - also proved problematic. Red on black is an attention grabber and as a result, a lot of other companies also were also using it. Once again, the early designs tended to blend in and become lost on crowded shelves. Experiments with different colors and "research" into classic zombie posters eventually led to the adoption of a green color scheme and when the "chewed hand" motif came up, it stuck.

"All of the noise instantly evaporated," wrote Valve Art Director Jeremy Bennett. "Suddenly we had this horrific, easily graspable image, visible from far away, that managed to get across the core concepts of the game all in one go: Zombies. Four. Danger."

But before committing to the design Valve tested it, along with others, by setting out fake game boxes in a nearby GameStop [http://www.gamestop.com] and observing the results. Based on people's reactions, Bennett wrote, the green art won, "hands down."

The box design wasn't quite complete, however; a fan at E3 suggested the final tweak, obvious in retrospect, that led to the classic Left 4 Dead box that's so instantly recognizable today. Does every game company put this much effort into their box art? Probably not. But it's hard to argue with the results. The whole story, including numerous other Left 4 Dead box art prototypes, can be read at l4d.com [http://www.l4d.com/blog/post.php?id=2353].

Umm...Did they put this much effort into the Orange Box cover?

[spoiler/][img/]http://myweb.polyu.edu.hk/%7E06896726d/blog/wp-content/uploads/Image/orangebox_360.jpg[/img]
It's possibly the worst box art I've ever seen.

The Orange Box isn't great, but it could be a hell of a lot worse.

That L4D box art is hideous, though. Thank God they decided to ditch it.

Doesn't mean you necessarily want to see it.

I wish they hadn't ditch the original outfits. I want my Zoe with the striped socks, my bum black dude, and a biker that doesn't look like a flaming homosexual.

Box art is all about grabbing your attention. Orange box does it with bright colors, L4D does it with imagery. Both are pretty effective. The only bad box art from a marketing perspective is non eye-catching designs.

I don't mind that box art, it doesn't look that bad to me.
The Orange Box art was a little disappointing I'll admit, but then again I can spot it a mile off :p

i liked the box art. it was plain and simple
I don't like it for the opposite reasons. It's messy, it's crowded, the title isn't eye catching, theres no underlining theme ect. I get it's pretty hard to do advertising 3 different franchises on one cover but I really don't think it works.

Pity they didn't fix Zoey's 3 hands [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/88333-Zoey-Knows-The-Sound-Of-Three-Hands-Clapping].

Lol, word from Valve is the Survival DLC revamped that screen to remove the bizarre third hand. :p

And it was an interesting read, the L4D box art is some of the most iconic I can think of ever seeing.

Yeah, but it did the job.

Why?

'cause it's amazingly ostentatious. No matter how many games you have in a pile, you will always find The Orange Box in a matter of seconds.

:p You should read the Caeser 3 manual sometime. Especially where it talks about the Medium Statue ( http://img.metaboli.co.uk/products/2176/en/user_manual.pdf : Top of Page 210) and that was released as is...

The "hand" box art is considerably better than the older design.
