New Science Offers Regenerating Muscles To The Elderly

As we age our muscles lose the ability to rapidly rebuild themselves, but new research has scientists claiming they can reverse this particularly detrimental quirk of the human aging process.

A recent study found that constant exercise is key to keeping muscle structures healthy in older people, but that when their bodies attempted to regenerate muscle tissue, instead of replacing any damage with new muscle, it was equally likely that useless, ugly scar tissue would form. By offering the body the "right mix of biochemical signals," however, the lab coat brigade was able to coax bright red muscle tissue to form, effectively giving old people the regenerative powers usually reserved for feral mutant berserkers.

"Our study shows that the ability of old human muscle to be maintained and repaired by muscle stem cells can be restored to youthful vigor given the right mix of biochemical signals," said UCal Berkeley scientist Irina Conboy [http://www.livescience.com/health/090930-aging-muscles.html]. "This provides promising new targets for forestalling the debilitating muscle atrophy that accompanies aging, and perhaps other tissue degenerative disorders as well."

As with all scientific studies more research is required before your grandfather will be able to walk to the pharmacy and pick up a bottle of youth pills aongside his Viagra, but things look promising so far.

It should also be noted that any resulting treatment stemming from this research would not replace the need for actual exercise. Though it seems possible to renew the muscles of the elderly, they would still have to work out to damage the muscles in the first place. Sedentary lard asses would still remain sedentary lard asses.

Very intresting, another study similar to this is being run for slowing aging:

But...Does this mean you have to have muscles in the first place :D -Pulls on arm- Just lots of nerdy flab here, no muscle. xD

You mean I can't just be lazy and take pills to get in shape? Damnit Science get on that.

Anyway, this is really good news. I think its interesting how we can manipulate our bodies to do what we want.

And in a related story, the catalyst for setting off these chemical signals is a large can of spinach.

Seems like it's a good start on the road to curing Alzheimer's.

Hope for my favorite writer, sir Terry Pratchett, I hope.

Meh, I'm packing quite a lot, even though I've got both asthma and allergy. Gym twice or thrice a week for two months and you're strong for the next year or so.

I'm still too young legally to go to the local gym, and even if I could, I'm still to tired and lazy to, I get home at school about 6 with a load of HW, plus, in my experience it takes ages to gain any muscle or lose fat really.

I sure do love good genetics that allow me to have muscles and barely work out.

<.< I probably should be more active...

I'm just waiting for the day the world militaries start using this technology. You know it's gonna happen. Until then, do your thing old people! We could use more Jack LaLannes around. His juicer is amazing.

Stem cells. Figures. Science can solve everything, given enough dead babies.
Hmm, a few dead 'babies' (if they can even be called such a thing at that stage of development - which I don't personally believe they can) which probably wouldn't even exist if it weren't for the research to improve the health of humanity as an entire species.

Yes, this is a deep ethical issue.

One small stgep towards immortality is still a step towards immortality.

This might get interesting yet.

See, I was making a joke. I don't really care about the development of this very project, nor do I have some deep-seated feelings for unborn children. I just wanted to point out how absurd it sounds, reduced to its true meaning.
Improve the health of humanity as an entire species? How about we stop living that long. Seriously, what do people do after the age of 60? Why do we have to live that long? Why do we have to be so healthy all of a sudden? We've been dying because of sicknesses and old age for thousands of years now. Why is it that bad? Why do people fear death that much? I think it's right that people die, it's what humans do.

Probably a lot more if they had regenerating muscles.

Why do we have to live that long?
Dunno about you, but personally I don't like seeing my close friends or family who I care about dying. It's kinda upsetting to see your favourite grandparent reduced to being unable to go to the toilet by themselves.

Why do we have to be so healthy all of a sudden?
Serious question? Really? Why do people want to be healthy? Oh I dunno, probably something to do with the fact that being ill feels like shit. All of a sudden? Did you miss the whole advancing of medicine since FOREVER?

We've been dying because of sicknesses and old age for thousands of years now. Why is it that bad?
Because Immortality is fucking awesome.

Why do people fear death that much?
Fear of the unknown, fear of not existing, fear of getting the afterlife 'wrong'. Take your pick.

I think it's right that people die, it's what humans do.
Doesn't have to be. We had this whole obsession with Slavery a while back but we got over that. Maybe we should get over dying too?

If you are too young to go to the gym, then you have a lot of time or you can't manage it.

Just two years ago I had so much time, I could play Guild Wars, WAR and Quake Wars at the same time and still get into a good high school.

Now my school starts at 7AM and ends at 2.30PM, so don't say you've got it bad.

Get with the times. Scientists had found a way to produce stem cells from your own body, without unnerving some unprogressive unintelligent people. Hmm, 3 U's. Nice.

You do know that the average age in the Old Days was about 30-40 tops? Now it's over 80 in Europe/USA/Oceania and 60-70 in the rest of the world.

Also, you seem to forget that with the extended lifespan, you won't be old at the age of 60. You'll be old at the age of 80-90. You'll enjoy your youth for a bit longer, have good health for those 20-30 years more and hey, maybe euthanasia will be made legal, so you can say "I've had enough" whenever you want.

Ain't that the truth. Seeing your grandma in a bed so tripped out on pain meds she doesn't even know you're in the room is not the most pleasant of childhood memories.

Now if only we can find a way to slow or halt the degeneration of brain neurons as we age.

So I get to maintain my eight-pack even as a senior citizen? Righteous!

This is a glorious victory for scientists and elderly gentlemen and ladies everywhere! More and more they'll be able to live their lives without reliance on nurses, machines, and walkers.
