Iggy Pop Defends Music Games

Breaking rank from the vast majority of classic rock icons, former Stooges frontman Iggy Pop has come out in defense of rhythm games such as Rock Band and Guitar Hero.

While speaking to USA Today [http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2009/10/lust-for-legos/1] about his Lego doppelganger's upcoming appearance in Lego Rock Band, Mr. Pop was asked whether he thought modern rhythm games are a "lazy way to try to produce music" or a catalyst for encouraging latent creativity in otherwise sedentary gamers.

"When I was a kid, the first records that spoke to me were novelty songs, like Charlie Brown by the Coasters or The Witch Doctor and Flying Saucer records in the 50s," Mr. Pop said. "Later, as my tastes developed, of course, I changed, but these silly songs got me started. So I say I come down on the 'let the kids have some fun and get into it' side of the argument."

Surprised that a man once famous for slicing his own chest open on stage would offer such a reasonable response to the ongoing controversy? Don't be. It seems that Mr. Pop has mellowed somewhat in his twilight years, as evidenced by his response to questions on how he was cajoled into appearing in Lego Rock Band.

When asked how this seemingly bizarre collaboration with developer Harmonix came about, he said simply, "They asked. There's not much I won't do if you asked nicely."

I think its great people are hearing some good songs from Guitar Hero and Rockband, and for some it'll spark their taste in one type of music or another. The flip side is getting nickel and dimed for some great songs that were packaged with crap.

...so what comes out of Lego Pop when he cuts himself open?

Who da' man? Iggy da' man.

Ahem, anyway. Nice to know he's not as cynical as the rest of them drug-taking, heavy-driking, sex-obsessed rock stars out there. God knows the worst thing you could be doing with your time is strumming away on a fake guitar instead of say... taking drugs.

Woo see thats a good look at it, not being some elitist asshole who thinks people shouldn't be allowed to have fun, and should learn "a real guitar".

This is one of his better tunes. Post rehab with David Bowie smacking him over the head to produce some music with some goddamn soul for once.

I don't get the people who hate those games.

Think of how many kids are going to play these games and maybe have a light bulb go off in their head, "Hey, I can make my own stuff with a guitar..."

These games are more help to music than having a stick up your music snob ass.

There is absolutely no doubt they will go forth to find music they'd never hear and maybe be inspired to try an instrument.

I think some people forget that 'Iggy' is a persona and the man behind the persona 'Jim' is a really nice guy. I got the chance to meet him in the early 90's as a kid and was blown away how mellow he was.

When I was a kid, my friends and I would jam out to songs pretending to be rock stars. Tennis rackets were guitars, markers were drum sticks.. Games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band just take this to a different level. I have yet to meet anyone who has played 'Green Grass and High Tides' on Expert in Rock Band and thought they were really musicians or could play it on a real guitar.

as Henry Rollins claims that Iggy is the true King of Rock'n'Roll, you can go disagree with that angry young man if you want but i won't

Iggy honestly rules and is probly one of the coolest musicians out there

Well, Iggy Pop is something of a punk legend, so maybe this'll make a few of the Guitar Hero-bashers in the music rethink their (usually) unfounded prejudice against rhythm games. And Iggy's argument does seem rather sound. I mean, several musically talented friends of mine got into playing guitar through rhythm games, so I'm inclined to doubt that these games are harming the music industry even slightly.

That is why IGGY POP STILL RULEZ and will continue to do so, while lot of his 'musician classmates' are either became senile or dead.

And he´s also a very gentle and intelligent guy... when he´s not on stage acting ;)

I'm gonna have to stop you right there. Elvis claims the title of King of Rock'n'Roll. Iggy has the slightly less sought after "Godfather of Punk," which sounds a hell of a lot cooler imo.

You can play guitar hero and all instead of learning a real instrument, that's fine. It's when people think that they're more talented than real guitarists that it irks me.

ok look at it this way, Iggy got REALLY high and strung out on drugs, he stayed thin and lived, Elvis on the other hand got fat and died

there is also the fact that Iggy has just so much animal magnetism about him and so much energy too
