Star Wars: TOR: Building a City-World From the Bottom Up

When you make a planet that has essentially been one giant city for thousands of years, where the hell do you start? This latest Star Wars: The Old Republic developer video shows us the building of the capital world of Coruscant.

There are few planets in Star Wars' galaxy far, far away as storied as Coruscant - which is slightly amusing, given that it never once appeared in the original movie trilogy (other than a brief appearance added to the ending of the Special Edition of Return of the Jedi). Since then, though, Coruscant has been featured prominently in all three installments of the prequel trilogy, is central to many of the books in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and so on and so forth.

This, of course, makes perfect sense seeing as how the city-world of Coruscant is the figurative center of the galaxy - it's the capital world for the entire Republic. The Jedi Council convenes here, the Senate is located here, and it is the uber-metropolis to dwarf all other pretenders to the "grandest of cities" throne. Naturally, building such a world is a rather monumental task for the development team at BioWare, particularly since Coruscant hasn't been featured in either of the previous Knights of the Old Republic games. Oh sure, we've had city-planets like Telos and Nar Shaddaa, but neither of those were Coruscant ... nor were they MMOGs.

I've loved all of the Developer Diaries thus far, and this one is no exception. On the other hand, seeing how Coruscant is shaping up makes me sad to think that we probably won't be able to get into one of those little airspeeders and zip around the giant buildings the size of Manhattan. How awesome would that have been?

I can't wait for this game. So much of my life is going to be spent on it.

Ah, I saw that vid when it came out a couple days ago. I usually don't enjoy cities in the slightest, but Coruscant is looking BEAUTIFUL.

And I thought I couldn't want this game any more than I already did. Well, guess what, I do want it even more now! I can't wait until I can walk in Coruscant, heck I think you can spend months discovering all there is to see on Coruscant alone, that's not even counting all the other planets. That was one helluva nerdgasm, I want the releasedate NOW!

That looks really nice. I just hope they can fill such a huge place with enough gimmicks and quests. The slums and the sewers just scream for bounty hunter quests.

Yeah. Especially for people, who buy the game after it has already been out for some time. Installing about five patches for such a huge game won't really be pleasant.

Tell me about it. I downloaded WoW (for the ten day trial, borrowed from my friend), and I must have sat there for half an hour waiting for the game to download... Had some pizza... finished pizza... game begins patching... go to friends house for a bit... game still patching... nine o'clock... almost done...

dear god, it was about ten oclock before I got any gaming done.

If I was to break down and play an MMO, this would be the one. Bioware looks to be doing an awesome job.

This game looks good. But will the player be in control of his character or can he only make his character walk around like in World of Warcraft?

If it's the later then i won't buy this game since i hate having to just watch and do nothing as my character beats up whatever i just right clicked on.
You don't control your character in WoW? News to me.

So what will this game be on? PS3, XBOX, PC? May be a stupid question, but just want to know.
