L4D2 Boycott Closing Down

With mission accomplished and nothing left to do or say, the Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott group [http://steamcommunity.com/groups/L4D2boycott] is calling it a day.

The Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott group was Valve [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/92174-Valve-Fans-Form-Left-4-Dead-2-Boycott-Group] of turning its back on the original game, fracturing the community and rushing to crank out a follow-up that would probably be sub-standard as a result. Not everyone was sympathetic to the group's aims, however; many observers called them "whiners" and worse, and claimed they were simply out to get something for nothing.

Valve, however, appeared to take them seriously, first attempting to explain why L4D2 is both necessary and desirable and then, when all else failed, flying two of the boycott founders [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/94599-Valve-Flies-L4D2-Boycotters-to-HQ-to-Prove-Them-Wrong] to its underground hive headquarters to have a chat with the team and see the new game in action.

And now, more than four months after it began, the L4D2 Boycotters are apparently satisfied with what they've seen. Agent of Chaos and Walking_Target, the Men Who Went to Valve, say they've accomplished what they set out to do and have thus decided to pull the plug.

"We have accomplished everything we can on our manifesto," wrote Agent of Chaos in what will presumably be the concluding announcement [http://steamcommunity.com/groups/L4D2boycott/announcements/detail/91356134662203323] for the L4D2 Boycott Steam Community. "We've been dealing with Valve ever since our group started, then we met them in-person and now we're at the point of concluding our discussions. Our goal wasn't to steer people away from L4D2, it was to get Valve's attention and have them support original L4D. We succeeded and that's where our mission ends."

"As a collective we have done more than achieve a few goals, we have paved the way for developer-community relations in the future. No matter what the press or other gamers say, we have made an indelible mark upon the future of this industry. You should all be proud, we certainly are," added Walking_Target. "The boycott has served its purpose and it is now up to you all as individuals to decide what is right for you."

Despite all the heat they generated, I found the boycott's leaders to be quite reasonable when I spoke to them last month [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/the-needles/6564-Left-4-Dead-2-The-Boycott-The-Visit-The-Aftermath-The-Interview]. It's something of a no-win situation for them; starting the boycott earned them the scorn of fanboys, while ending it will no doubt bring down the wrath of the haters. But as Walking_Target noted, the boycott has established a new benchmark for the community-developer relationship and with Valve having gone above and beyond the call to address its concerns, there's really little reason left for it to continue. The Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott group will be closed down once and for all at noon EST on October 21.

Well, there'll still be boycotters. Just yesterday, I heard someone say L4D2 sucks because there are day levels.

Poor misguided fools.

Waaaaaaaaaaait wait wait wait wait... Isn't the day levels what makes it cool? Any fool can do horror at night, it takes skill to do it during the day!

OT - Cool. I guess this shows that consumer relations can work. I do think taht starting with a boycott was a bit stupid, but meh.

Hey, look at that, the mass of whining children discovered that yes, they were indeed getting more than they thought they were, and yes, it is worthy of a sequel. just like so many people said. who woulda thought? only difference is, they got a little more out of it all, including a trip to meet the team.... absolutely amazing. developers really shouldn't cater to this method of attention seeking BS, they'll create a standard that they'll never really be able to live up to...

Well, it's good that they've reached an understanding. I can see why they would have issues with L4D2, I have to say I had apprehensions when I first heard it was being released. But if they say they've achieved their agenda, then there's not a lot else left to do, is there?

You're welcome.

It's nice to see that someone changed their stance for once, although I'm not sure if they're entirely responsible for the DLC, I'm pretty sure Valve had that planned before.

I know. I made quite a sarcastic comment, and he left. Better to have A.I. than an idiot, right?

At least all the nonsense has ended somewhat, and i will be playing the demo, and then soon enough the actual game, and enjoy it.

I kind of figured it wouldn't last. :p
Valve isn't some cheap money grabbing douchebags who don't support their games. I think we've figured that out.

In other words "we got a free trip to Valve and got to play the game early, so we're pacified". I'm still disappointed in Valve giving them any attention at all.

Aww ain't that cute, people on the Internet are trying to look cool by hating something.

So, there were 2 possible outcomes:

a) boycott doesn't end, people laugh at them.
b) boycott ends, people laugh at them.

Can't please everyone, I guess.

I really hope they improve the matchmaking in this one... I'm just thinking out loud.

Anyways, it's nice to see that both sides were civilized about the matter. The boycotters admit their defeat and everyone is happy :D Except for the other 50.000 haters xD

If by whining children you mean the adults that made the boycott to show that not supporting a product will result in lost sales on future products then sure.

Maybe you should realize that it's the consumer that dictates what a market has, not the manufacturer.

Edit to add that L4D is still incredibly buggy in all game modes and this new content just brought about even more bugs on all game modes but survival.

And now there will be dozens of conspiracy theorists saying that the boycott was a plot by Valve to attract publicity, that nothing Valve promised will come true, and that the founders of the boycott were really on Valve's payroll/were bribed by Valve.

Seriously that was their excuse? That's like condemning Uncharted 2 for changing what button throws the grenade. It holds about as much water as a bucket full of holes.
