Roger Daltrey Hints at The Who: Rock Band

Roger Daltrey has revealed in an interview that a The Who [http://www.rockband.com] will apparently be coming out sometime next year.

Band-specific music games seem to be all the rage these days: Some are good (renewed interest [http://www.thebeatlesrockband.com/] in videogames in his bandmates.

Now you can add The Who to that list: Speaking to MassLive.com [http://www.masslive.com/entertainment/republican/index.ssf?/base/entertainment-0/1256282196223070.xml&coll=1], singer Roger Daltrey said a Rock Band project based on the group is coming next year. "The game, yeah, yeah, they're going to be doing a Who one next year. There is one planned," he said.

It turns out that unlike many of his peers [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/92605-Jack-White-and-Jimmy-Page-Dont-Like-Guitar-Hero], Daltrey is a big fan of the music game genre. "(The idea) is fabulous," he continued. "Anything that gets non-musical people interested in music is wonderful. In my opinion, music is our last true great freedom. They can burn our books, they can burn our paintings, but they can't stop us singing and making music."

I've never bought a music game in my life and until today I never thought I would, but if this thing awards bonus points for smashing your controllers at the end of the game, man, I am sold.

I wonder how they're going to handle the existing Who songs that are in Rock Band 1 and 2?
Will we end up buying them again, or will they get added to the new game only if you've already got them as DLC?

Stupid stupid plan. With the amount of Who DLC available there's no need to release a full Who game.

It could be something like Rock Band: Classic Rock (The Good Stuff).

In which you have a collection of incredible classic rock bands (zep, sabbath, who, floyd, any of the amazing jam bands from the 60's and 70's, Cream, etc.) and you get to play as the band for those songs.

That, I feel, would make this news make some more sense.

OK, meme thread.

-5 Points for doing a CSI Miami joke.
-5 for a *removes glasses* reference.
-10 for doing a "Who?"
-10 points for asking about their Doctor.
-10 for doing a "Who's On First" reference.
-20 for asking if you can play Rock Band by smell.

Thing is though, most of The Who's music is known more for its soundbites than its play. It'd like having Dark Side of the Moon on Rock Band. But I guess we never know Who did it...

Dammit.

(EDit: -30 if you confuse it with Guitar Hero)

Every band that's ever heard of Rock Band will, at some point, claim that they're making a full game for them. Green Day, Pearl Jam (later confirmed to just be a live track pack), Queen, now The Who?

Yeah, no. They'll probably all end up as track packs like AC/DC, putting out a quick succession of cookie-cutter games doesn't sound like the sort of thing Harmonix would do.

(Note: by 'track pack', I'm not referring to DLC. I mean the on-disc things like they've done for country, metal, AC/DC, etc.)

I really don't know what other band has the huge fan base and mass commercial appeal that The Beatles have to support it's own band.... maybe Led Zeppelin....

I'd rather see a game that had, like, a double billing. It would be better to have a game with two or three bands whose songs I all love rather than Rock Band 2 which has six or seven songs I love and then a bunch of junk... and a forever life of DLC.

The Who is awesome, but apart from the hard core fans, what are you going to play after the five songs everyone loves? Ah, but a game with The Who and David Bowie.. That might be better. Not like the the games with songs by a band and a band's friends or whatever, but solid hits from two or three bands.

Love Beatles Rock band, but it made me very aware of how fragile it all is.

Been there done that.

That's the other issue people have brought up. Most of the classic Who songs are already available. I'm afraid that ship has sailed for them.

ok i will always sing the songs while kneeling down but sorry i always wear my sunglasses at night and never remove them. then i ended up running into a doctor who was talking about my generation. so i asked him who was on first and he said what? and i said Doctor? he then asked if we wanted to play rockband and possible smell his glove

there i think i got a few points and got a few more for some more bizarre song references :)

one of them i think Malygris might be one of the few who actually get it

Yeah, this is the tricky part. All the Who songs that I (and most other people) want to play are pretty much already available [http://www.rockband.com/music/artists/The_Who]. Sure, there's probably another few that people would cherry-pick, but other than that the only market is hardcore Who fans.

Given a choice, in general, I'd rather have a larger variety of bands than a dedicated game with all their obscure tracks. Though The Beatles: Rock Band is perfectly justified, I can't really think of another band that merits their own game.

AC/DC Rock Band-style releases, on the other hand, I'm totally down with. There's a good number of bands I'd be perfectly happy to see an album-sized 10-15 track set available for.

Do you get points for smashing the crummy little plastic instruments at the end of the set?

Saw Daltry and Townshend and the other guys who make up for Moon and Entwistle earlier this year - effing fantastic. No equipment smashing although Townshend gave his amplifyer a sterm talking to when it started acting up.

Wait, is it just the game being sold? Or are they going to have a whole bunch of new stylised peripherals like with the Beatles: Rock Band?

Well, there are the pair of shades for starting "Won't get fooled again". :)

Dammit. Another one.
