Fans Find Left 4 Dead 2 DLC Hints in Demo Code

Left 4 Dead 2 may not be out yet, but some enterprising fans have uncovered references to potential DLC packs in the demo's code - as well as evidence that the original four L4D Survivors will be returning.

It may have taken Valve a while to actually get the L4D2 demo out the door, but out it is. Naturally, it didn't take long at all for tech-savvy fans to start picking through the game's code in search of potential juicy yet-to-be-announced information. Which it appears posters on the Rage3D forums may have found - two particularly intriguing bits, no less.

The first should be interesting to almost everybody with more than a passing interest in picking up L4D2: The data-diggers have uncovered references to what looks like two DLC packs named "Miracle" and "Apocalyptic," in the form of error code that kicks you from a lobby that has the DLC enabled.

[blockquote]// DLC strings:
// "SessionError_DLC_RequiredTitle_1" "Miracle Pack"
// "SessionError_DLC_RequiredKicked_1" "You were kicked from the lobby because downloadable content was selected.n"
// "SessionError_DLC_RequiredJoin_1" "Game requires downloadable content provided with Miracle Pack.n"
// "SessionError_DLC_RequiredMessage_1" "Please, download Miracle Pack content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace."
// "SessionError_DLC_RequiredOffer_1" "Would you like to download Survival Pack 1 content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace now?"
//
// "SessionError_DLC_RequiredTitle_2" "Apocalyptic Pack"
// "SessionError_DLC_RequiredKicked_2" "You were kicked from the lobby because downloadable content was selected.n"
// "SessionError_DLC_RequiredJoin_2" "Game requires downloadable content provided with Apocalyptic Pack.n"
// "SessionError_DLC_RequiredMessage_2" "Please, download Apocalyptic Pack content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace."
// "SessionError_DLC_RequiredOffer_2" "Would you like to download Apocalyptic Pack content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace now?"
// End of DLC strings[/blockquote]

Judging by the above code, Valve intends to make these DLC packs available on Xbox Live as well as Steam, perhaps indicating that the PC game maker has reached a form of agreement with Microsoft (the sort of agreement that console TF2 fans have been waiting for for two years now). While the outcry of "they're making DLC by holding off on stuff that should be in the original game! WTF!!!" is almost predictable at this point, I'm not entirely sure it's warranted. Plans for DLC do not indicate complete DLC or even DLC under full-on development, and come on - a company that can't get a demo out the door on time is unlikely to have the DLC finished in a timely fashion.

The second piece of datamined information should be more interesting to fans of the first Left 4 Dead. While I'm personally looking forward to playing with Coach, Ellis, and the rest, there are some L4D fans that just have a hard time letting go of the original game's cast and can't bear the thought of a game without them. Fortunately for these poor folk, it seems that the game includes lobby character selection mugshots [http://img137.imageshack.us/g/coach.png/] for all eight Survivors from both games.

It's unclear how this will be implemented, or whether there will be in-game justification for their presence in the storyline (likely not) but diehard L4D fans will probably be happy that their naked Zoey mod [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/92419-Zoey-Goes-Nude-in-Left-4-Dead] will still be useful.

See, I'd be playing this demo right this second, but I'm not allowed because I preordered from Amazon instead of a retailer.

And with the return of Zoey I'm looking forward to Left 4 Head - Series 2! Now featuring Rochelle!, unfortunately. God I hate the internet and all of its pornographers.

I've learned from TF2 to get the PC version only. This only strengthens my resolve.

Wow, and all I found scrounging the game archive was two Johnathan Coulton songs on the in-game jukebox. My game kinda ground to a halt when "Re: Your Brains" started playing and we all hung around laughing and listening, even through three zombie mob attacks.

From what version was this information mined? The 360 one, no doubt...

Either way, you're going to have people complaining that the game is unfinished. DLC by nature seems to attract that argument these days....

Take that, Coach. I don't plan on playing as you anymore.

I would of thought it would be the Pc version, since that is by far the easiest version to look for this kind of stuff. Is it even possible on the 360?

I don't know, but the whole "Xbox Live Marketplace" line seems to suggest that this code came from the 360 version. Unless Valve is adding GFWL support to L4D2... which would be awesome.

I'm really looking forward to this. Ever since I lost my ability to play the original (through a string of unfortunate events), I'm itching for some zombie slaying.

From what I can tell the above isn't the actual code. It's basically rewritten guesswork code.

Do we even have a list of all the core episodes of L4D2 yet? I don't think these are actual DLC events, it's just how they had to code it for the demo.

This is Valve we're talking about here. I would like to point out how late Half Life 2:Episode 2 was.

I already have my baseball bat for the PC, plus it was 5 bucks off. Go Steam.

"...L4D fans that just have a hard time letting go of the original game's cast and can't bear the thought of a game without them." -- This is true. LOL Guess this was inevitable that it would just be quite different. Nick is probably the coolest; Ellis is gay; Coach is cool but no Louis; and as nice as Rochelle is, she is no Zoey and even tries a little too hard (not the best voice actress IMO). Well, we'll all get used to em sure enough with the greater amount of lines in the full game of course. heh

Am I the only extreme L4D player who can see myself liking the new cast more than the old ones. I'll still miss Zoey and Louis though but the new group seems to have so much personality among them.

Yay, I'm happy. But what's most awesome is the fact that the girl is wearing a Depeche Mode t-shirt. I call dibs on her... Playing as her, that is.

Hell yes! I can play as Bill again!
Dude, Bill is so L4D1. Coach is where it's at now!

(Just joking. Bill is still incredibly awesome, and the thought of him fighting alongside the new crew is fun stuff. Gotta wonder how they'd do those interaction bits though: you know, where the characters address one another.)

Hmm? Sorry? Couldn't hear you, there are Pills here!

Yeah, I too wonder how they're going to do the character interactions. Coach can go screw himself by the way, Bill 4 Life! (Or Nick, I could roll with that too)

Bill, Nick, Zoey, and Ellis :D

The new L4D2 girl seems kinda annoying but I'll wait and see.

I'm actually interested in playing Ellis, Coach, and Bill, with maybe a smattering of Francis during days I'm experiencing irrational hatred of everything.
