The Week In Review

The Week in Review: It watches you sleep. This week, we get Steamy with Stardock CEO Brad Wardell, ice a cake of delicious stupidity with a litigious shut-in, consult the Great Law-Devil, pour a 40 on the curb for Pandemic, and watch Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford let out some hot air.

7 in 10 Gamers Prefer Steam

Seemingly bored with taking pot-shots at Valve, the Gearbox head honcho Randy Pitchford has turned his attentions to FPS veterans id and Crysis developer Crytek, bashing them for making games that push technological boundaries rather than focusing on current hardware. In Pitchford's eyes, id and Crytek are risking failure by assuming that this console generation will last the same length of time as the last one. Does he have a point, or is he just attention starved? (link [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/96144-Gearbox-Boss-Says-id-Crytek-are-Risking-Failure])

Still sucks about Pandemic, Steam being on top, again doesn't suprise me...and Aussieland seems like it's living in the stone age...rather than the information age.

I feel bad that 200 people lost thier jobs but I feel no remorse for the studio itself closing. Mercs 2 and LOTR Conquest where not the quality games I came to expect from them. And why they let another studio take over Destroy All Humans (and butcher it) is beyond me.

How long does that Atkinson jerkwad have left in office? Is there any chance of him getting re elected? What do his numbers look like in the popularity polls? Is he doing any good for the country?

I think the man is sharing his opinion. Not craving attention. I don't wish to sound like I'm telling someone how to do their job, but couldn't you just have left it with 'Does he have a point?'. Sure its not a witty finish but that just seems like a cheap shot to me.

Atkinson Continues to Insult Australian Gamers

Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson, or the Great Law-Devil as I like to call him, has reaffirmed his stance on an R18+ rating for videogames in a letter to a constituent. According to the Law-Devil, parents would be unable to prevent children from playing violent games at home, and so it is safer all round if Australia continues to be the censorship capital of the English speaking world. Noting that he is up for re-election this year, the Law-Devil goaded Australian gamers to field a candidate the stand against him, clearly subscribing to the 'come and have a go if you think you're hard enough' school of politics. Classy Mike, classy.(link [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/96194-Michael-Atkinson-Once-Again-Dismisses-Gamers])

This pisses me off so much. People who are writing him letters are obviously intelligent people (toot toot) who want to show him that gamers aren't misanthropic psychopaths only concerned with the worst side of humanity. There are plenty of good ideas to make sure minors don't get the games (well, legally anyway) and with the proper information, parents would be a good force behind it as well.

UGH, I want the man to see reason, he's trying to do the right thing but he's doing it the wrong way.

But me calling Michael Atkinson the Great Law-Devil is fine?

Although I do think this Gearbox dude is just getting ahead of himself over the success of borderlands, he does make a good point about making technically demanding games that not many people will be able to run well. I'll never buy Crysis, because I can't be bothered with the strain it'll have on my weak graphics card. but less demanding games like L4D2 will be right up my alley.

He's been in the game industry for a decade.

Borderlands isn't Gearbox's first game.

I knew that. I was saying that he was getting an inflated ego off of this particular game. I said nothing of his other projects. How could you possibly misinterpret me? :3

My Internet has been screwy lately so I only logged on to this site just once in the past week. I'm glad to see that I didn't miss too much (except for the Pandemic thing, poor guys) and am really happy that the Escapist provides these awesome week in reviews. Thanks, Escapist team!
