"By never having you leave the perspective of Gordon Freeman, and having him remain silent throughout, you really felt like you were the protagonist."

Personally I felt like a "special" child, only armed. You could hump people's legs and shoot wildly into the ceiling and no one would shift their calm composure. Pity Zombie Freeman :(

Yep, that was basically my point. (And as I said in a followup comment: don't get me wrong, I love HL2's gameplay and story -- it's just that the story happens around Gordon without seeming to actually involve him.)

I don't mind the lack of reaction from NPCs if you're being silly (jumping on their heads, smashing everything around them with a crowbar, firing wildly, etc). It's kind of like you're an actor (a "special" actor) trying to ruin a play, but everybody else is just ultra-professional. My first time with a game like this, I always play my part properly and save messing around for later playthroughs.

Gordon's lack of a voice became something of a joke in HL2, other characters calling him "the strong, silent type," "not much of a talker" etc. He's just a window into the world.
