Man Controls Cybernetic Hand With Thought Alone

European scientists are heralding a breakthrough achievement in the field of robotic-limb brain control.

Pierpaolo Petruzziello, a human, was recently able to control a cybernetic limb using only his brain. The Europeans scientists behind the breakthrough are saying it's the first time that such complex movements have been possible by a patient controlling a mechanism using brainpower alone.

Petruzziello lost his left arm at the elbow a few years ago and says that the mechanical "LifeHand" experiment gave him the sensation and feeling as if his arm still existed. He was able to move individual fingers, make a fist, and pick up objects with about 95% accuracy. It's rumored that Petruzziello even demonstrated how he could flip people off with the mechanical hand, which must have felt good.

The arm is unfortunately not implanted bionic-man style, it's attached through a series of electrodes in Petruzziello's remaining left arm. Still, it's an impressive feat that brings us one step closer to the reality of people chopping off their own limbs to replace them with cybernetic implants. However, before you go thinking you can be the first real life Barret [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barret_Wallace], the cost will have to be brought down a little for widespread use as project budget exceeded $4 million.

Awesome!

Machinegun, chainsaw hands that crackle with lightning and nerve-wired powered armour are just around the corner.

That's awesome. Now, if only we can get this for feet and legs... or perhaps add sensors to the hand like the touch screens on computers to register the feeling of an object.

It's great, it really is, but this isn't exactly huge news.

For quite awhile people could control basic computer functions with thought, and some basic control of limb, this was just the first case I have heard that instead of testing the limb on a table, they sewed it to the guy.

It's awesome but, not much of a big step forward for people who have been keeping track of this kind of stuff.

Awesome... Now, I just wish there was some footage of this.

I wouldn't bother changing out my limbs... I'd just make a robot nano-suit thingamajigger... yeah... Awesome!

I've heard about something similar to this: a guy lost BOTH his arms in an accident, and one of them he controls with switches on his shoulders/collarbone, and the other one he controls by moving the nerves that would normally be moving his arm. Through a surgery, the nerves that would normally control his non-existant arm were re-wired to his chest, and the arm picked up a series of muscle twitches that resulted from him telling it to, say, "Make a fist" and his chest would start twitching, the arm picked it up, and would perform the action.

However, it wasn't entirely accurate, and while he was still grateful that he had an arm, it wasn't entirely accurate. I never would've believed that you could control a bionic arm like THAT though. (Ghost in the Shell flashbacks)

We'll have Automail before you know it. There's nothing about this which isn't cool.

I'm setting up anti-cyborg EMP towers around my house as we speak. They won't catch me unprepared!

This stuff is semi-old....I think.

I mean, people have done it before, but not actaully pratically used as arm, I think it was posted before...But I'm not here to critize, I'm too busy drooling on shirt...I MEAN HE CAN STILL KINDA FEEL THINGS...Oh Goddd.

The antique arm whined as he reached for another mug. It was a Russian military prothesis, a seven-function force-feedback manipulator, cased in grubby pink plastic.

Except the pain of the nerves connecting and the years of physical therapy.

watch this video it shows an arm that is controlled by nerves, muscles, or foot pedals according to the video.

thats pretty awesome
wonder how long till they make it useful for everyday stuff without needing to have money pouring out your ears to afford it
