Rebellion Ponders Closure of Former Tomb Raider Studio

Tomb Raider [http://www.rebellion.co.uk/].

"Strong talk" surfaced earlier today that Rebellion had pulled the plug on the Derby studio, formerly known as Rogue Warrior [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Core_Design] bombing badly.

Rebellion is expanding its headquarters in Oxford and also recruiting for its Runcorn studio, the company said in a statement, but the lease at the Derby operation is coming up and its future sounds somewhat less than ironclad. "Growth is sometimes painful, never more so than in the current climate and we have had to take a long hard look at how we operate our studio network," Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley said. "Strategically we have decided to review the need for the Derby facilities, and consultation with staff at Derby is ongoing."

In a follow-up comment, however, Kingsley clarified that for the moment, at least, the Derby studio remains open while the review is underway. "No-one has been made redundant by Rebellion in more than a decade, and the Derby studio is very much still open while we conduct the review," he said. "We are currently undergoing a process of consultancy with our staff to get their ideas, and establish the best possible future for the Derby studio."

Given this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93584-Lara-Croft-May-Get-Her-Own-Street] and this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/96457-Help-Name-a-Street-After-Lara-Croft], I'd say they've just blasted their entire support network into smithereens.

i dont think rebellion have made a good game since sniper elite.

i think its about time they faded away.

it's hard to feel bad about them closing down, since they aren't talented.

also i bought rogue warrior so i want them to pay.

ITs a shame it may have to end this way, but, sometimes its good to let good things die quietly, lettign them rest with the memories they had and what they did.

Although, for the people who might lose the job they had...

Hang on, let me run that through the "optimistic bullshit" filter:

"Yeah, I'd start making sure my resume was up to date if I worked at the Derby studio."
Ah, much better.

Rebellion can't fade away. They own 2000 ad, a national bloody treasure. If that went tits up then i'd weep profusely. In fact im weeping now!

They were making the wrong kind of games. Mediocre copies of games long gone out of favour. It's a shame they're not doing well, but they must realise the success of Tomb Raider was because it was, in fact, innovative and unique. They should've continued the trend.
