GameStop COO: DLC is a "Good Thing"

Despite its potential to reduce the pre-owned games trade, GameStop [http://www.gamestop.com] COO J. Paul Raines says downloadable content is "a good thing" because of its overall positive impact on the medium.

You might think that GameStop would cast a jaundiced eye on DLC, at least as it's been employed by Mass Effect 2 [http://www.bioware.com]. With both, BioWare included launch day DLC that's free to new customers but a hefty $15 for anyone buying a used copy, a glaring disincentive to anyone considering that route. Yet Raines, whose company relies heavily on the sale of pre-owned games to maintain healthy profit margins, sounded surprisingly upbeat about it.

Taking part in a panel on the future of digital distribution at the Wal-Mart [http://game-business-law.com/] and European game retailers. "The only way a company like ours survives is being dedicated to the category," he said.

That dedication apparently extends to DLC, which Raines indicated GameStop sees not as a threat but as an opportunity. "Downloadable content is a good thing because it enhances and extends games," he added.

The downloadable market remains small, largely because customers experience too much "friction" when trying to get to the content, Raines said. He suggested GameStop could help grow the market by making it easier and more accessible for consumers. "That business could grow medium double digits today," he claimed, slipping into a thick, nearly unintelligible dialect of marketspeak. "Customer acquisition continues to be a huge part of the spend in this business."

As for GameStop's current condition, Raines said the company is doing well. ""Rumors of our demise have been greatly exaggerated," he added. "We'll release financials in a few weeks, so you'll see if we're still in business."

What's a COO?

And DLC gives me a reason to hold onto my games, or invest in a DLC including edition down the road.

I don't see how it will really help Gamestop, but I'm not a market annalist by any means.
I actually was hoping to find out a COO was, it sounds funny...

My brother and I have tourette's syndrome. Every so often, when he was younger, he would make the sound "Coooooooooooo." Aside from this, I have no idea what a Coo is, but thanks Gamestop for reminding me that my brother and I make wierd noises. Also thanks for planning to try and make DLC as irritating as everything else you do.

I think that's a good idea. Making free DLC for people that buy the game is good.
And I've got to agree with Furbert on this one. Gamestop is lying. They're trying to play that "Walmart is the true evil" card halfway through.

Not that it's interesting to see a physical retail executive who's actually happy about video game DLC, I just I think this is quite frankly a publicity stunt: a mere promotion of a friendly image.

Additionally, why WOULD'NT GameStop be happy about DLC? They've been doing the "exclusive game content" thing for quite some time now, and I for one would be surprised if it didn't turn in a considerable profit.

They're all for DLC for one major reason: Pre-Order Bonus DLC.
If you didn't buy Mass Effect 2 in advance from gamestop, you didn't get the Terminus Armor or the Blackstorm gun, if you didn't pre-order Brutal Legend, you didn't get the Tenacious D guitar, and so forth.
So long as they have the Pre-order DLC game sewed up, they have little to fear from DLC as a whole.

Game Stop makes most of their money on new game sales. Why do you think they pressure you into pre-ordering every time you go in there and have launch day parties. DLC is good for their primary business. However it is bad for consumers. If I buy a new game I have to also purchase the DLC for each individual in the household or else say "Sorry Jr. but your brother gets to have Shale for his account. If you want him too you need to cough up the cash." Trying to hurt the used game industry is an even worse idea. The only reason I bought Dragon Age new was because I was able to sell my old games. I didn't even know about the free DLC coupon until I got it home. The DLC had no bearing on my choice to buy the game new. The fact that I heard nothing bad about it and I tend to like Bioware's games made me buy it new. If developers put as much effort into making good games as they do screwing customers I might start buying more new games. As it stands I just can't see spending $50+ on something that will only be mediocre at best.

DLC's a good thing when done right. Like make some a few months after release day so the people who buy it used or new have a chance to get used to the core game.

COO? So he's a pigeon? Of course they'll make nice about it there's nothing they can do anyway. I wonder what they hope to gain from this line. It makes sense if they can use it as a lure. A la this! Perhaps something else like this.

I wonder if this is spin, or simply a foolish belief. The biggest reason to be afraid here is that DLC Herelds the dawn of mainstream dominance of Digital Distribution, which will happen far too soon for Gamestops likeing. And that will seriously mean the collapse of Gamestop. Also, the more DLC is released, the less content will have to go through stores. If a single game lasts longer because of DLC, then thast fewer games the gamer needs to get through Gamestop.

Of course, I'm at a point where going to a physical store for my games seems quaint and old fashioned, so I feel pretty indifferent.
