Research Links Depression With Internet Addiction

Boffins have discovered that heavy internet users tend to be depressed, go figure.

British scientists from Leeds University recently completed a study that indicated there is a link between excessive internet use and depression. They found "striking" evidence that people using a crapload of the internet often "replace real-life social interaction with online chat rooms and social networking sites."

Online chat rooms? Do people still use those? Anyway, back on topic, the boffins' study was supposedly the first on such a large scale, analyzing over 1,300 Britons from ages 16 to 51 to see how down in the dumps they were compared to their use of the intarwebs. 1.2 percent were deemed "internet addicted," (twice the rate of gambling addiction in the UK) and spent way more time looking at porn, playing videogames online, and visiting online communities than the rest. They also had a "higher incidence of moderate to severe depression than normal users."

Head boffin Catriona Morrison says: "This study reinforces the public speculation that over-engaging in websites that serve to replace normal social function might be linked to psychological disorders like depression and addiction. This type of addictive surfing can have a serious impact on mental health." I could have told her that the first time I heard of the "poopsock."

The question is: Which comes first, depression or the internet? The boffins don't know, only that there is a link according to their study. If anything, the internet could actually relieve depression in some cases, as it allows isolated people to socialize, and bored people to not be so bored. At the same time, the internet can be a refuge for the depressed, with an infinite amount of information to distract from one's troubles. I know sitting in front of a computer all day can make me feel awful, but watching videos [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/doraleous-and-associates/1439-Episode-Three-Troll-Bridge] is a great pick-me-up when I'm a little blue.

You sure they all aren't depressed because they live in Britain and see images of other places when they are online?

KIDDING!

While still interesting, I do not believe that being online causes depression as much as depression causes more online time. It would be more credible if they widened the study to include other cultures and countries.

I'd like to see the comparison between depressed people before the internet and after. What did depressed people do before? Are depressed people still doing that or did a part of them move to the internet?

Oi!

I don't think it's the internet; it's the sort of people who spend that time like that anyway; same with people screaming that WoW addicts people, you need the addictive personality first, the medium won't just change you.

I'd like to point out that usually when you see the expression "over 1300" in news articles this usually doesn't mean, 10, 5, or even 2000, it means "between 1300 and 1500" at most.

I'd now like to point out that 1.2% of 1500 is 17 people or so. I find it hard to give any credit to this "research"

Being addicted to something makes you unhappy?

Do you think that this unhappiness is measured when the bofins take the addicts away from that which they crave to ask them boring questions?

Could just be...

This seems to strike a resemblance to the "video gaming makes you fat and depressed study" ([link]http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93968-Science-Says-Gamers-are-Fat-Depressed-Losers[/link]).

The difference that I like about this article is the assertion that just because there is a correlation doesn't mean that one factor is the single, direct cause of the other.

As a side note, I was depressed long before I was a regular internet user. I credit psychiatry to my current, relatively sane state, but I think that the internet and my experiences on it have improved my outlook at least a little bit.

For me, the depression came first, as people are generally not fond of me, to put it lightly.

Maybe depression makes them turn to the internet.
I would just like to point out some common sense to the people researching this and coming up with these conclusions.

"SCIENTISTS PROVE LINK BETWEEN _____ ADDICTION AND *insert negative impact here*."

The word addiction in itself implies damage, so anyone addicted to the internet is BOUND to get depressed, especially if it's 4chan.

That's why I'm on the internet. Depression leads to WoW, WoW leads to gaming and gaming... leads to suffering addiction.

I always seem to get upset when I talk to other people for extended periods of time.
From what I can tell, it's not the internet that causes depression, although I'm not normal so I'm probably an outlier.
But ya, having a voice talking to you is probably important sometimes.
