GameStop Subpoenaed Over Deceptive Ads

GameStop [http://www.gamestop.com] has been subpoenaed by the New York Attorney General's Office over deceptive online ads that offer discounts but actually result in small, recurring charges being applied to customers' credit cards.

GameStop and 21 other "popular online businesses" were the subject of an investigation into discount offers presented to customers as they shopped online which actually lead to separate "membership program companies" that charge fees for their services, usually without the knowledge of the customer. Specifics about the nature of the program and the costs involved are typically "buried in fine print and cluttered text," according to a statement [http://www.ag.ny.gov/media_center/2010/jan/jan27a_10.html] by Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo, and because of the small amounts involved, many customers don't even notice the charges.

"This online scheme has impacted the finances and tried the patience of tens of millions of consumers nationwide," Cuomo said. "Well-known companies are tricking customers into accepting offers from third party vendors, which then siphon money from consumers' accounts." Online movie ticket seller Fandango has agreed to halt the practice and Cuomo said he expected the other retailers involved, which along with GameStop includes high-profile companies like Barnes & Noble, TicketMaster, FTD, Staples, Pizza Hut and Expedia/Hotels.com, to do the same.

GameStop Vice President Chris Olivera said the company was still looking into the complaint but indicated that it would cooperate with the investigation. "I can confirm that we were subpoenaed," he told Kotaku [http://kotaku.com/5464504/gamestop-among-retailers-subpoenaed-over-deceptive-ads?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+kotaku%2Ffull+%28Kotaku%29]. "We are still reviewing the matter but do intend to work fully with the New York AG's office. Beyond that, I would not be able to provide any additional comment."

Let this be a lesson, kids: Always read the fine print before you start throwing around your credit card number. It's really not that complicated.

Yeah, next they'll be getting power crazy and screwing over developers and publishers by releasing games on digital download before the publisher has even physically released it to the market shelves...oh wait, they already did that.

Yeah, their online division is screwing customers.

I never had problems in the store. I always get the games I ordered. Whenever I special order anything, I get what I asked for.

I do not even mind the trade in thing because it is a business and they need to make a profit on their games. Their policy is no different than any other place that does trade ins: 10 percent off if you want cash, 15 percent more if you want credit. Sure it may not be fair for you who paid 60 dollars on a new game to discover that you will get barely 35 back for it, but it is still an accepted business practice.

They got me on this once. After checkout they put up a screen that basically has a click here to continue button but that button automatically uses your account information from checkout to subscribe you to a magazine or something with automatically recurring charges.

Always read the fine print, or one day, when you accept the terms of a Steam agreement or something, you may find yourself without a house.

Or do as I do, and "Ctrl+F" your way through fine print.

GameStop is the only place on the list I've gone to recently. If the complaint proves true I'll stop going. I've used Fandango once or twice out of necessity--if I have to use that I'll use it again, but there are plenty of alternative to GameStop.

Besides, last time I was there I got into a flame war with the check-out guy... =/

And people wonder why gamers are so bitter towards the corporate conglomerates that took over gaming creation and distribution.
