Gas Powered Games Announces Fantasy RTS Kings and Castles

Chris Taylor from Gas Powered Games announced that he was making a new fantasy RTS called Kings and Castles by ... going to a farm.

Gas Powered Games has had quite a few successes since it was founded in 1998 by industry vet, Chris Taylor. After Dungeon Siege and its sequels, GPG went modern with the huge-scale Supreme Commander 2 [http://www.amazon.com/Supreme-Commander-Pc/dp/B000FNA2QY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1279571055&sr=1-1]. Now it appears that the company is going back to its roots and making an epic real time strategy game called Kings and Castles. According to the release, the game is being made for PC and "next generation consoles" and will pit 3 kings against one another in an original fantasy world. There was no word on a release timeframe, or whether "next generation" consoles means this generation or the next-next generation.

Kings and Castles will feature GPG's trademark of being able to zoom into any level of detail. "We also promise to gouge evil from its shell at least once, or maybe twice," said Taylor. "But not three times. That would be weird."

Announced at the same time as the game is Chris Taylor's video blog series on the development of Kings and Castles. The first episode is up today, and in it Taylor doesn't really mention anything about games or design, other than the fact that feeding a horse and game design are not very similar. It appears that the video blog will offer insight on the design of Kings and Castles but will also try to do so with as much entertainment value as possible.

As Taylor puts it, "Synergy will be leveraged, and paradigms will be established. More importantly, buzzwords will be utilized."

I'm not really sure which I'm more interested in, the fact that GPG is heading back to fantasy or that I can watch Taylor screw around over the course of its development.

i have a hard time focusing on what he saying, i use all my brain power figuring out wtf is going on and why he does it.

he does seem like a cool guy though, but i still think every man should approach their job with dignity and style, cracking jokes about the difference between feeding a carrot to a horse and designing games does not fall under that category.

They showed pretty clearly that console rts games don't work with that disastrous supreme commander port, why are they even bothering now?

If this is anything like Age of empires... but on a larger scale such as SupCom... Win!

I think Supreme Commander is a pretty cool guy. Eh trolls gamers and doesn't afraid of anything.

Also, Kings and Castles? That's the best name they could come up with? Good thing they didn't call it Swords and fireballs n' shit I guess.

I wonder what the superweapons will be? Maybe it will be a galleon with legs similar to the steam powered spider thingy from wild wild west. Or a giant cannon that fires a ball the size of a small moon.

Also, whats with him always having 3 races square off against each other? Is it that hard to make a rock-paper-scissors game with only 2 or 4 factions to choose from? I wonder if it'll be 3 humans, or 1 human, 1 elf and 1 dwarf or if an orc side will be featured instead of 1 of the 3.

I'm hoping the name is meant to be ironic...
And the fact that it's a console RTS dooms it a little, but I'll still watch some more of these videos ^^

Although he resembles him, I find Him far more interesting than seth macfarlane.

I love RTS games, so I'm looking forward to it. and the blog.

Well, it seems interesting. Gas Powered Games makes some great games, although some have a few problems along the way, but that also has to do with community (Looking at Demigod, the beginning had huge server load problems, but that was because it was pirated over 500,000 in the first week alone while the retail sales were less but got screwed because of this).

And the rambling videos are somewhat entertaining (far better than the straight-forward snooze fest that was the Star Trek Online developer videos).

You know, looking at Chris T., you'd be forgiven for thinking he's just trying too hard to be wacky, liked and cool, but he is like that all the time.

True story bro.
