Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Will Sport Day One DLC

EA seems to be living up to its promise of downloadable content and will be releasing Mass Effect 2 [http://www.amazon.com/Battlefield-Bad-Company-2-Xbox-360/dp/B001QXNBJM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278699912&sr=1-1].

Last week, the COO of EA, John Schappert, said [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98180-Every-EA-Game-Will-Have-Online-Component-in-2011] that all games from Electronic Arts will have an "online component" in 2011. CEO John Riccitiello echoed that this is part of EA's global strategy to shift more towards a downloadable content provider. It should be no surprise then that after the success of Mass Effect 2 and its Cerberus Network, that EA will do something similar with its next big release, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (BBC2). When the highly-anticipated shooter releases on March 2nd, those that purchase it at retail will have access to a VIP code that will provide extra content at no cost. If you buy the game used, however, you'll have to pay a fee to access that same content. EA has not confirmed what that payment will be, but 15 bucks seems to be the standard.

"We want people to insert the code they get when they buy the game to get access to [DLC content]," said the producer of BBC2, Patrick Bach. "It's connected to your personal account, more or less, and what we want to do is give you something extra, added value, for that. In the future you will get more content, for free, if you have this VIP code."

Bach didn't state what exactly that "extra value" would be, whether it's new weapons or multiplayer maps. Also, because it will be connected to your account at EA.com, it might suffer from the same problems that some users had with the Cerberus Network.

In general, I applaud the efforts of publishers trying to eke what value they can out of their IP. But I buy my games new for the most part. For those of you who might be more used games, does this encourage you to buy a game new or just piss you off?

Dragon Age's Day One DLC pissed me the fuck off, so I am again placed on the fence over this game.

I think it's great they are finding a way to combat used game sales. It not only kills Gamestop, which I deeply despise, but it gives money to the developers who busted their ass for a game, and gives money to the publishers, although some may be more deserving of others.

That was managed poorly, and costed a great deal. What EA are doing is trying to convince people to buy games early, by offering you the chance to get DLC for free. It worked well with mass effect, and still seems to be working with the new armor they released. I think it should convience more people to buy now, which is what EA wants.

Twas the needless amount of registration and red tape that annoyed me.

I'm glad they'll be supporting it like this, but at the same time, I'd rather not have to pay for simple additions like a map or a vehicle.

Overall, I think it's a good thing to have options and different styles of play, but in reality, day-one DLC doesn't appeal to me because I usually get all the extras after I've finished the first parts (ie: fallout 3)

Yeah loads of red tape...

All I remember doing was logging into the game and clicking download.

As I'm playing this on PC, thus there is no second hand market... don't much care :)

Although hope they don't feck it up like they did with BF2 by adding 4 different DLC packs that you have to pay for, which split the entire userbase into who could play what maps.

Well i was planning on buying this new anyway, so i'm fairly happy at the notion that i get stuff for free rather than buying a preowned one and having to pay extra.

This might finally force greedy Gamestop to lower it's used game prices to something more reasonable for someone not needing to buy a game from a distributor to sell it used (especially with the crappy credit they give you for the game).

I think Angry Joe at the Angry Joe show made some littl erant about the Cerberus Network at the end of his Mass Effect 2 review. Still I don't see why people are feeling cheated by it. All it means is that used game retailers like Gamestop are going to have to make thier used games more than 5 dollars cheaper than a new one. You certainly aren't forced to buy it or install it. Still better than the alternative which is DRM.

I didn't have any problems with Dragon Age's Day 1 DLC. Then again I got the PC version.
