Nintendo May Add Rumbling Styli to Next Handheld

The Nintendo DS stylus is destined to become much more than a stick used to poke things.

Rumors on Nintendo's next handheld are already flying around (and I'm not talking about the already announced tilt function [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/pocket-gamer/6722-The-Pocket-Gamer-Report-The-DSi-Goes-XL] last week. The latest speculation involves future DS styli that could rumble in our hands.

The speculation was kicked off by a recent Nintendo patent addendum [http://appft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-bool.html&r=4&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=PG01&s1=Nintendo&s2=Kyoto&OS=Nintendo+AND+Kyoto&RS=Nintendo+AND+Kyoto] that includes the mention of a force-feedback stylus. The patent clearly involves the DS, as it begins: "A game apparatus includes an LCD, and a touch panel is placed on a top surface of the LCD." It then details a method through which the player of this apparatus can attack enemies in a game, saying: "In a case that the enemy character exists at a depth of a game screen, little damage is applied to the enemy character, and a weak vibration is applied to the game apparatus. Conversely, in a case that the enemy character exists at a front of the game screen, much damage is applied to the character, and a strong vibration is applied to the game apparatus."

Mentioned in the patent application imagery (found here in PDF format [http://www.freepatentsonline.com/20100022303.pdf]) are three different levels of vibration, all "transmitted to the fingers or hands of the payer via the stick." It looks like someone forgot to spellcheck, but this statement implies that Nintendo wants to patent the idea of rumbling sticks, i.e. styli, in relation to touch-screen play.

This idea is a natural progression for the Nintendo DS, seeing as how Nintendo Wii Remotes already rumble in a similar manner. If it weren't for handheld gaming taking place so close to one's face already, I would expect a speaker to be included in the stylus like the Wii Remote too. The basic premise of wireless technology being used to alter the DS stylus' functionality paints a future for it to become less a "stick," and more of a controller. Though the "DS2" is but a rumor for now, I'll be very interested to see what Nintendo comes up with. Perhaps morphing styli someday?

A rumbling stylus would be hard to use for precision. As if it wasn't hard enough.

Dammit, ninja'd. Although my comment was going to be along the lines of "but it can still be used to poke things...*wink wink*".

OT: While it certainly sounds interesting, I doubt this is going to happen. Methinks Nintendo is patenting it just to patent it. I mean, I can't see outfitting styli with the equipment to make them rumble to be a feasible feature.

That's priceless!
OT: I don't really care about minor features such as this, but I'm pretty hyped up for the DS2.

I can image I'd drop the stylus a thousand times a day because of a rumble feature... hm.

I expected there to be jokes about different applications of the stylus... I was right.

It may prove difficult to use and not precise. Also I wonder how big it would be if it has a rumble feature. If it was incorporated you would hope for it to remain mobile.

It still won't have the software support the DS enjoys. I bought more games in 6 months for my DS than for my PSP in 1 1/2 years.

Plus Nintendo has Pokemon.

And thus a new genre of porn was born.

At least its more usefull than the normal ones.

Hell cotton buds worked better than the stylus you got with the DS.

The exaggeration of the Single minded shows how I was joking... I had to edit it in, so I guess you quoted it too fast!
It's a case of Poe's Law. While you may have been joking in this case, I've seen people make similar arguments with full sincerity.

I wonder if the stylus will be hooked into the DS unit with something that would be part a strap to keep you from losing the stylus, and part a power cord to avoid needing separate batteries for it.

Not sure what I think about the concept, though. I can think of half a dozen bad ways to utilize stylus rumble, but I'm not so sure about good ways. (The thing they described in the article didn't sound too interesting to me.)
