Kojima Infiltrates Twitter, Compares Peace Walker to Avatar

Legendarily insane Japanese game designer Hideo Kojima is finally on Twitter, and is using the service to promote the hell out of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker [http://www.amazon.com/Metal-Solid-Peace-Walker-Sony-PSP/dp/B002BS47TE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1279057077&sr=1-1], which he's calling "a test."

Ah, Twitter. Once a mere curiosity, these days it's more surprising to see a celebrity or company - particularly those in the realm of traditional "nerddom" - who lacks a Twitter account than the other way around. Some people have been slightly slower on the uptake than others, and others may just have been too busy to hop on board the Twitter Train (Twain?), which may be why it's taken so long for Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima to get his own Twitter account [http://twitter.com/Kojima_Hideo].

Kojima's Twitter is, of course, completely in Japanese (which would, y'know, make sense), but thanks to MGS5 [http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/02/25/hideo_kojima_mgs_pw_on_twitter/] - doesn't mean that the PSP will be the de facto platform for the series going forward.

"PW is a test," wrote Kojima, "to see what type of expansions are there if MGS is brought to a portable. We're not just rising vertically with development on next generation systems, but also horizontally, trying to expand gameplay."

But where is this expanded gameplay? If you're thinking to yourself that screens and video of Peace Walker look just like every other Metal Gear Solid, then Kojima thinks you'll change your mind once you get your hands on it - like audiences changed their tune once they'd actually seen James Cameron's blockbuster Avatar in glorious 3D. "It's difficult to show the interest and freshness of PW through video. Cameron's Avatar was a huge hit because of the 3D video. That can't be communicated through text and a trailer. It's something you won't understand unless you experience it for yourself in the theater."

I'm not sure how playing a game on a tiny screen is comparable to seeing a special-effects bonanza in full 3D, but that's Kojima for you. Peace Walker is out at the end of May in the US and Europe.

So its generic and overhyped, and (while not being bad) isn't actually as good as people say?
Doesn't sound like a great selling point for your game if you ask me.

Perhaps it has to do with the control scheme?

Maybe he thought it sounded innovative when Yahtzee jokingly lied about how Duke Nukem forever used the shoulder-buttons to walk?

It's times like these that make me wish I was boring and slow enough to get into MGS.
But then again, its better that I don't try.

You know, I would actually call it pretty bad.
But, no the time, nor the place here.
Not a really great selling point, Kojima, Rising is still higher on my list.

Not even the visuals impressed me the second time around for Avatar, despite that it was then I finally saw it in 3D.

Plus, the damned subtitles completely ruined the 3D experience... :(

...

Uh, as for Peace Walker... no comment? I haven't even managed to play through the original MGS yet. >_>

Hmmm... Didn't he swear to never work on another MGS game after MGS4 was released? Or am I having another one of those brain farts?
Just like he did after MGS2 and MGS3.

I think that he also said "I'll stop making them when people stop buying them." or something to that effect.

I can't say much about Peace Walker, as I haven't played any MGS (completely). I tried to start with 4, but that was a bad idea, as I had no clue what the Hell was going on. Maybe I'll track down a copy of the first MGS one day.

*sighs*
The only personal experience I've had with Twitter is people quoting me out of context for the sake of their amusement...
Really, I don't like Twitter, 'cause it seems to attract ill-contrived comments; Tweets are so short, you can't have an encompassing context to your comments. What happens when Kojima makes a typo and suddenly looks like a psycho-freak for it? Perhaps I'm just a little paranoid.

He said he'd stop after MGS3, but felt obligated to when people sent death threats to the person who was going to direct after him.

Now he feels like going out of the way of Snake's story (because he says it's "over") and going to what Big Boss' exploits in the run up to the end of the Cold War were.

Here is hoping his test will be successful!

At least he is honest about his intentions
