Metro 2033 is a "Love Letter" to PC Gamers

Sometimes it seems like console gamers have all the fun but THQ says that Metro 2033 [http://www.amazon.com/Metro-2033-Xbox-360/dp/B002V16T0Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1279055004&sr=1-1], the upcoming FPS set in post-apocalyptic Moscow subway tunnels, is going to be a "love letter" to PC gamers.

Developed by Ukrainian studio 4A Games [http://www.4a-games.com/], Metro 2033 is an end-of-the-world shooter in which most of humanity has been wiped out and those few who remain have been forced underground. In Moscow, that means the subway tunnels - the Metro - where they eke out a subterranean existence, making occasional, brief forays to the surface to scavenge for supplies.

It sounds cool and it looks even cooler, and that's an angle THQ [http://www.thq.com/] is playing up; the game is being released for the Xbox 360 but with support for nVidia PhysX and DirectX 11, along with a planned 3-D version, it's Team PC that seems to be getting all the attention this time around.

"If you are a core PC gamer and you're wondering where all the love's gone when your PC games are just a slightly higher res version of what's on the console, then I'd say 4A are writing a love letter to you and doing absolutely everything to make the PC version phenomenal," said Huw Beynon, THQ's head of global communications.

For those with the equipment to handle it, the 3-D version of the game will offer even greater immersion that the regular release, although Beynon admitted that the market for it will be very niche, since the technology involved is still proprietary and a little on the pricey side. "3-D on PC uses nVidia's 3D Vision technology, so it's down to the specific hardware and you need a specific monitor for it," he continued. "So, for the time being, it's not like Avatar [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499549/] where hundreds of cinemas are equipped to do it. In gaming it's going to be a relative niche."

Metro 2033 is scheduled for release on March 16 for the PC and Xbox 360.

<3 THQ. I've actually been a bit intrigued by the 3-d technology, I just might invest in it sometime in the near future. This game sounds right up my alley.

Let's hope they actually deliver, otherwise all this'll fly back in their faces.

Having said that, the game looks pretty solid from what I've read in previews.

Fingers crossed!!

Sweet, this game looks pretty good. Although my computer is on the older side of things so lots of the fancy graphics won't matter =(.

Well, I'll admit it, I'm hyped. This sounds like exactly my sort of game in every single way.

I just hope that they don't cock it up, otherwise I shall be a sad Furbie. However, I'm sure no matter what its sins, it'll be savable with mods.
This. Although I am pretty certain it will have a few GLARING bugs, or other things that will make me facepalm. Sorta like the STALKER series, which were really quite good but with a couple things that made you wish the devs weren't being paid in vodka.

If that is what you call a "love letter", then what is a "hateful letter"?

I sense a connection here.

Ukrainian dev team, awesome PC version.

Is it perhaps because over in eastern europe, PC gaming is really strong, and dong a bad PC version is a bad idea in every sense?

it's a modern game, get over it. I need to upgrade to meed the recommended specs for Arma II and the new S.T.A.L.K.E.R., but they run fine.

Three cheers for Eastern Europe's relative immunity to console gaming!

This sounds quite a lot like STALKER, but on a planetary scale, sounds good.

A hateful letter is all those shitty ports we've gotten, like GTA4 and others, and all the series that started out being on the PC but then became exclusively console titles.
Hateful letters are all the DRMs that are nothing but a hassle to the people who actually buy the games. Those things are hateful letters.

Edit: Or just a letter that says "I hate you!"

I'm almost definitely going to buy... but I sure hope THQ just accepts money as an acceptable response to a "love letter". I'm sorry THQ... but my heart is still with Bioware....

Right-o. I wanted to point that out, but you already did that for me. Here, not many gamers even heard about Halo, and if you mention Spyro the Dragon or Shadow of the Colossus or even Metroid, everyone will just look at you funny. So yeah - if you want gaming environment almost completely free of consoles, move to Glorious Mother Russia at once!
