Square Enix Reveals First Deus Ex: Human Revolution Trailer

It's official: The upcoming Deus Ex game will be called Human Revolution and to mark the christening, Square Enix [http://www.square-enix.com/na/] has released a sexy new trailer offering the first look inside the prequel to one of the most influential videogames of all time.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution [http://www.amazon.com/Deus-Ex-Human-Revolution-Pc/dp/B002I0HKRQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278969688&sr=1-1] is set roughly three decades prior to the original conspiracy-laden classic. Players will take on the role of Adam Jensen, a "security response specialist" at a bleeding-edge biotechnology firm who finds himself caught up in a multi-layered conspiracy that will have him fighting for his very life. While Adam begins the game as "all organic," he will be forced to undergo augmentation as the game progresses in order to survive and achieve his goals.

The new trailer doesn't show any actual gameplay footage but it has inspired some heated discussion among fans of the series, ranging from debate about the meaning of the opening dream sequence to complaints that Jensen's augmentations don't look primitive enough to fit in with the Deus Ex [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_Ex_%28game%29] timeline. As a more sophisticated gamer than most, I don't indulge in that sort of wild speculation, but I did notice that the hidden soldiers near the end of the video were wearing uniforms that looked very much like those of MJ12...

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is currently in development for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. No release date has been set, but more information has been promised for E3 2010 [http://www.e3expo.com/], which runs from June 15-17.

Interesting... I never played the first one, but I played Invisible War (which I'm told is garbage), and mostly enjoyed it, so I suppose I should go play the first one before playing this.

Invisible War wasn't a bad game, it just had the misfortune of being the sequel to one of the best games of all time.

Never played any games in the series, so forgive my lack of enthusiasm. Show me some gameplay, then we'll talk hype.

Calumon: His face was fuzzy!

Hmm... interesting. I like the themes that they're representing. I'm really hoping this can live up to the legendary original game.

I think speak for discerning gamers everywhere when I say:

Please please please please please don't screw this up!!!!!

No story breaking sequel fishing, no day 1 dlc, do the pc version right or don't release one at all.

As mentioned above, it had the stigma of being the successor to one of the best PC games of all time. Mostly the problems were that a lot of the RPG elements that made it a REAL FPS-RPG removed. (In the original, by completing missions, doing side quests and finding hidden areas/ taking harder routes gave you achievement points that you could use to upgrade your skills, such as having less recoil when shooting, being able to move faster when using heavy weaponry and hacking computers faster (and being able to stay hacked in for a longer time)among other things)

I did like the way that they stripped down the bioaugmentations a lot so you could change them around if you didn't like the ones you had before/ needed toadapt to the situation. I felt it fitted the character better. But what really annoyed me was how they got rid of area-specific damage. It ruined a lot of the combat, especially when headshots often did little extra damage and you needed to kill the mech suits quickly.

OT, it'll be interesting to see where this goes.

Good God, I think I just geysered.

Invisible War may have sucked more than a black hole, but this is looking very spiffy. I can only hope they'll re-implement some of the features that made the first one the amazing game that it was.

Part of me wants to preorder this right now but a larger part of me is very pessimistic. Points against it:
-Regenerating health (go suck your thumb)
-Cover system (in a corner)
-No darkness based stealth
-Being developed for console (solution: a separate team devs the console version; they are gagged and bound during meetings with the main team)
-Impossibly high standards from the first game + my nostalgia

That said, I will be watching this closely.

I'm not sure what to be more excited about though, the new Deus Ex or Thief 4.

Eidos Montreal art director Jonathan Jacques-Belletete at GDC 2010 said:
"A lot of people were saying just do Deus Ex 1 with better graphics. And there's a lot of that in our industry--just do that, but bigger and shinier. We didn't want to make an echo of the first one."
That's what Ion Storm did with Invisible War and it was a huge failure! Even if he's simply talking about changing the art direction instead of the perfect game mechanics, he is treading on dangerous ground. And judging by the trailer (which is pretty balls to the wall awesome) the world doesn't look too alien. So they better not change up the mechanics too much.
