DS Could Stream Content from Netflix

Streaming Netflix movies directly to your DS is a possibility, according to Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime.

With Netflix streaming movies, game consoles will almost certainly be among the recipients of this new service. But what about handhelds? The DS technology is already sufficient for streaming movies, Fils-Aime said. "We've already shown an ability to transmit content from the Wii to your DS," he said. "We do it with [Nintendo of Japan's video-on-demand] Wii No Ma service. We can transfer game demos from the Wii to the DS too, so the technology is absolutely possible," Fils-Aime said.

While there are no plans currently in motion, Netflix has been polling users to see what platforms they'd like to see the service available for. The DS is among them, and Nintendo is certainly receptive to the idea. "Netflix is a wonderful partner and one thing they do is utilize data and consumer research and they are constantly asking their user base all kinds of questions," Fils-Aime said. "So for them, they're constantly looking for ways to bring their experience to as many people as possible."

Nintendo's obvious interest isn't surprising. This service could be hugely popular and profitable for both companies, and the enthusiasm is definitely there. There's no official word yet, but who knows? We may hear more soon.

I don't understand. We go to theatreas to see our movies on full size walls. We buy million inch tvs to watch our movies on. Why do we want a small little screen to watch movies on?

Because sitting on buses can be extremely boring.

It is strange, especially since the DS uses WIFI anyways, you're generally near a larger TV for the most part. Apart from being one of those "Oh that's cool" situations, I don't see how this would be particularly useful.

Maybe you could save it to a flash drive and watch it later? Now that would be useful.

Well that explains the DS but not Netflix on the DS.

They keep thinking of more and more for the DS. Not a bad thing though...imagine it been a mini TV on the move. Be kinda cool

I don't think this is a good idea. To be honest I thought the idea of a portable game system as a movie-watching device was a good one up until I tried it on my PSP. Let's just say that watching movies on a tiny eye-bleedo-vision screen is not fun, especially when your in one of the places your liable to use a portable (transit, waiting room, on a break, etc...). Chances are if you are home and want to see a movie your not going to try and do it on a portable.

The DS will not be able to stream video over the internet. It will only be able to stream video over a LAN from a Wii. The Wii needs to decode the stream and pass it to the DS.

The DS can barely decode DivX via a device directly attached to the DS, I'd hate to see it try a more processor-intensive codec.

(Further, isn't the DS only 802.11b?)

Actually, I have yet to try it (this just became today's project), but if you own a PS3 and a PSP, you should be able to do this already by leaving the NetFlix app dvd in your PS3. It shows up as a movie, not a game, so it should stream just fine, to anywhere. Very corner-case, yes, and I'd love to see the feature on the DS AND the PSP natively, but for those who want this ability today, you may already have it. ;)

Until we have a more ubiquitous WiFi, this won't really pan out in the states. However, here's where this sort of thing CAN work for either a DS or PSP.

1. Athletic clubs could buy/install DS/PSPs at locations and compete by offering personalized instant movies while you work out. Hell, waterproof that ***** and strap it to my face while I do laps. Beats endless CNN or (gawd ferbid) FoxNews.

2. Mom and Pop diners could install built-in DS/PSP MovieJukes, similar to the music juke on the table in the diner in the Soprano's series finale. Of course, there would need to be a Juke-style selection list to ensure no "Showgirls" at the neighboring table while you eat a Denver omelette. "Spongebob" will be a insurmountable hazard.

3. Library movie viewing stations could get very cheap to set up and operate.

I'll stop there before the light starts shining behind my eyes and ubiquitous streaming NetFlix starts to resemble a second coming of sorts. But on-demand wifi video streaming to a portable hand-held can be awesome in many, many ways.

Blame Apple's iPod video. Once that ball started rolling there was no stopping it.

I love this idea. Hopefully this happens very soon. As you can probably tell, I love my DS. My little, pink DS. I would love to watch a movie on my DS, even if it will destroy my eyesight. I don't understand how this would work, though. Would there be like a remote sort of thing on the touch screen and the movie playing on the top? Will it stretch the movie to cover both screens? Let's see how this works out.
