Starbreeze Cancels Unnamed EA Project - UPDATED

Chronicles of Riddick [http://www.amazon.com/Chronicles-Riddick-Assault-Athena-Xbox-360/dp/B001L18RIE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278963185&sr=1-1] developer Starbreeze Studios has pulled the plug on a project it was working on for Electronic Arts, leading to speculation that the long-rumored Syndicate remake may have met an untimely end. (Update: It hasn't.)

Google translated statement [http://www.starbreeze.com/]. "Our relationship with EA is stronger than ever, and the aim now is to spend more resources on the game that demonstrated the greatest potential. This game is already in full production."

Unfortunately, Kristiansson didn't specify which game he was talking about and while the demise of early-stage projects is nothing terribly unusual, this one is a bit more newsworthy because one of Starbreeze's ongoing EA collaborations is, or at least was, Project RedLime, strongly rumored to be a new game based on the Bullfrog classic Syndicate [http://www.mobygames.com/game/syndicate]. The Syndicate franchise has been dormant for almost 15 years and the possibility of a rebirth has old-time gamers wide-eyed in anticipation.

According to a Bourne [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/90609-New-Syndicate-Game-Confirmed] game also being created in partnership with EA. We've dropped a line to the studio for clarification, but in the meantime, let's hear from you. Which would you rather see get the axe: Syndicate or Bourne?

UPDATE: The Los Angeles Times [http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2010/03/future-of-bourne-video-games-uncertain-as-ea-cancels-title.html] has reported that the canceled project is in fact the Bourne game. EA has apparently shut down the game and while a source says the ten-year deal between EA and the estate of Bourne author Robert Ludlum remains in effect, EA has confirmed that there are now no Ludlum-based projects in development.

I'm glad they cut one to focus on the other to be honest. Spreading yourself too thin is one problem developers continuelly face.

Starbreeze? I loved Riddick and The Darkness...

Sad whenever anything Starbreeze does is cancelled.

Give Syndicate the ax.

The Darkness was based off a comic, and Riddick was based off a movie.

They can do Bourne.

I'll agree there. If they can concentrate on one thing and make it epic and awesome then I am all for it...as long as they dont see it as a chance to cut more than what they need to

So, they've axed the Bourne game and gone for a Syndicate game?

From what I've heard, that's pretty awesome.

Ahh well. I didn't play the first Bourne game. I haven't read any of the books or watched any of the films, either...

Not a big deal to me.

To those saddened that it's the Bourne game, just play Splinter Cell and shake your monitor around at the same time.

It's good to see Syndicate might be getting another go. It's a strong idea, the previous games were great, and it definitely has appropriate cross-platform appeal. I can see it being enjoyable on both PC and console if the formula is somewhat similar (but modernized).

Syndicate with asymmetrical factions would be nice, look at me, its not even out let alone confirmed and I'm making demands, maybe thats why I'm single.

Sometimes I disgust myself!

Or do what I do and watch the films while holding a controller, its really effective at immersing you in that way.
