Rumors of LittleBigPlanet 2 May Be True - UPDATED

While discussing possible applications of the PlayStation Move, a Sony representative revealed the (not terribly) existence of LittleBigPlanet 2 [http://www.amazon.com/LittleBigPlanet-2-Playstation-3/dp/B002I0K780/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278963110&sr=1-1].

During an interview, Sony Benelux's brand manager, Folkert Langeveld, mentioned something called "LittleBigPlanet Twee," which appears to be an obvious reference to the existence of LittleBigPlanet 2. The focus of the interview was Sony's plans to implement PlayStation Move technology into already existing franchises, such as Flower, Hustle Kings and a genre of games dubbed "Sports and Shoot." Lending more weight to the possibility of a Sackboy sequel is a section in Gamespot reserved for LittleBigPlanet 2 [http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/littlebigplanet2/index.html], with the byline reading "Media Molecule and Sony Europe are already working on a follow-up to their critically acclaimed platformer."

I'm as big a fan of Sackboy and friends as the next person, but I'm puzzled over what a sequel could include that 2 million user-made levels couldn't. Of course, the addition of PlayStation Move technology just might bring enough innovation to recreate the franchise. Of course, the interview was entirely in Dutch, so far all we know he was just ordering lunch. If any of our fluent readers would care to help us out, we'd very much appreciate it.[/I]?

UPDATE:According to ConnectedConsoles [http://connectedconsoles.com/ps3-Sony-Comment-On-LittleBigPlanet-2-Speculation.cfm], the rumor of a LittleBigPlanet sequel is unfounded:

[blockquote]As demonstrated recently at GDC, LittleBigPlanet has been shown as an example of how an existing game could benefit from PlayStation Move Motion Controller support. This is not a confirmation of LittleBigPlanet 2, and we do not have any announcements to make about the LittleBigPlanet franchise.[/blockquote]

Don't you think the sequel will BE an exapantion? I mean there's not much you can do with the LBP franchise, really, it's Little Big Planet! Any "sequel" will probably just be another planet, with another "story". Don't get me wrong, I LOOOOVE LBP but, I really don't think a sequel will be necessary. Just make some more levels for DLC... or something.

I don't personally own a PS3, but I've heard great things about LBP. If they include motion control and make the game worse, I don't personally see why it should be made.

Yeah, even if it is a "sequel" it's still going to be an expansion regardless. Doesn't make it any worse, I'd love me some more LBP. There are plenty of things that can't be done as DLC, or if they can it'd be much easier to pack them all into one Blu-ray disk.

That's a very fair point. I mean I literally can't think of any suggestions off the top of my head. I suppose more sackboy customisations would be something, but that's not even gameplay related, not all that impressive. How can they reinvent the game without essentially starting from scratch?

As a Dutch man myself I can tell you that he only mentions LBP2 as one of the new games to use motion control along with the new Socom.

He also said that the Move will come with a sub controller to give the hard-core gamer more accurate control.

The only thing Little Big Planet needs now is to be released on other consoles and PC.

Yeah, I know, it's an exclusive...

I think there is more than enough room to polish the basic physics and mechanics to justify a sequel, not to mention all that nifty Move integration (I mean, have you seen the latest interface demos? That stuff works better than a mouse for this kind of thing).

As long as it's a Move project, it includes all the functionality of the first and somewhat better physics and 2.5D mechanics, I'm game.

EDIT: For the record, I mean this:

http://kotaku.com/5500300/playstation-moves-minority-report-controls-in-action

Where you can clearly see how Move interface for level creation would be a big improvement over the slow-ass dualshock controls used in the editor in LBP.
They should've showed this at GDC.

This looks infinitely more cool than any of those wipe-the-screen Eye toy games.

They wouldn't start from scratch, they'd just put in some overall improvements in the physics engine and put in pounds upon pounds of new materials, functions, gadgets, gizmos, etc... into it. While it could be offered as DLC, putting all that stuff together on one disc makes it better.

Though we won't know for sure unless it's actually announced, so let's wait and see.

Uhm, yeah. This rumor should have been quashed before it even went anywhere. The devs already said that making a sequel would be a step back, and they'd rather just release new content as DLC for the original LittleBigPlanet. And I see no reason why such content wouldn't allow the current LBP to take advantage of Move if that's what they want.

And a mere GameSpot page doesn't mean jack. Yesterday, they wrote an article about the "3DS" where they first (and correctly) called it a successor to the DS brand, and then in the very next paragraph, changed their minds and called it "the fifth iteration of the DS hardware." So, GameSpot putting up a LittleBigPlanet 2 doesn't surprise me: they're merely as dumb as IGN. Nothing more.

weres the WATER expansion?
Already released, as DLC. It's been out for months now. It's part of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" level kit.
