Soulcalibur Coming To PSP

Namco's weapons-based 3D fighter will be making its portable debut with Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny on the PSP, a game based on the Soulcalibur IV engine. Yoda and Darth Vader will, unfortunately, be absent.

Soul Calibur, erm, I mean, Soulcalibur will make the jump to handhelds this summer with Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny on the PSP. Based on the Soulcalibur IV engine, the game features all the hallmarks of the latest entry in the popular fighting series, but adds a number of new features as well.

Broken Destiny will play point-for-point like SCIV (and, according to GameSpot [http://www.gamespot.com/psp/action/soulcaliburbrokendestiny/news.html?page=1&sid=6208732], looks pretty damn close too), but primarily focuses on making the fighting engine more accessible for beginners. 80 exercise missions will school scrubs in Soulcali basics from Guard Impacts to one-hit KOs.

In addition to the new tutorial modes, the standard arcade, versus (which can be done locally over Ad-Hoc) and survival are here, though online multiplayer hasn't been mentioned, yet. The character creation also returns with new parts, so all the fanboys and girls can still go ahead and get wild making their Cloud Strife replicas.

Namco Bandai said that there will be more than 20 characters in the game, including most of the SCIV cast (no Darth Vader or Yoda, though). Confirmed so far are SM weirdo Voldo, armored-up prude Hilde, monstrous axe-swinger Astaroth and the unbelievably busty Ivy, among others. There'll also be new characters, though Namco only revealed one: Dampierre, a silly looking character who wouldn't be out of place in an Ace Attorney game. I swear, Soulcalibur takes itself less seriously with every game.

Sounds more like an expansion to SCIV than just a straight up port. Namco's even tweaking some of the gameplay mechanics, though specifics are scarce. Could be a worth keeping an eye on for PSP owning fans of over-the-top sword swinging and scantily clad ladies (or dudes).

Wow, no Vader and Yoda. This may be the better version showing up then! As long as they don't micro-transaction DLC, I'll be pretty happy. And I'd like to see some integration for those that have both games...

Oh it makes me feel VERY good. But my wallet is going to cry itself to sleep with the many many games I intend to purchase. My "to buy" list leave my wallet in a cold sweat.

Good to hear all these new games are coming to the PSP, especially since I just got one (yeah I know...).

One question: Is that a picture of a guy, wearing ass-less shorts?

Kinda makes me wonder why they're pushing the PSP so much NOW. It needed boosts about 3-4 years ago, now it's too late. People already talk about the PSP getting obsoleted by a PSP2 so many potential PSP buyers are going to stay away until that comes out.

And why fighting games?
well, they are kinda the epitome of travel games. You can start and stop them at a moments notice, and not really have to worry about too much progress or anything. Something you can easily pick up with a friend via local connection, and almost anyone can play them and be moderately succssful.

As for pushing it now... I have 2 theories.
1- Sony is doing the same with the PS3. Bringing a bunch of games out, and trying to get people into their products. This is just included in a brand wide push for publicity and saturation.

2- The PSP2 is going to be more like a DS -> DSi upgrade, and although it will lose the UMD (according to rumors) it will still be more or less the same. Maybe just a new form, with a couple more functions. Great for people who don't have one, kinda "meh" for those of us that do.

I hope that wasn't a thinly veiled attempt to bring more female gamers to the site, Keane!

MY EYES! Seriously Keane, did you have to do that to us? Couldn't it have been Nightmare or at least just Voldo's front side? *sobs*

That's Voldo.

Rule 1 about SC: Don't ask about Voldo... ever

Wait, doesn't Voldo wear a cod-piece...? Talk about the lesser of two evils there

He broke the rule without realizing it. There should be a PSA about this... for the children's sake.

Yeesh. On second thought, forget Voldo altogether. Let's stick with ANYBODY else.

This, in my opinion is what the PSP was made for, mindless multiplayer fun. I own a PSP myself and the minute you try to take it seriously as a console, you start to think that it's the Wii with a few graphics improvements, a lot more hard-core games and minus the occasionally insanely frustrating Wii controls.

You can't compare the PSP games to their counterpart games on other consoles because they're just not it the same league. The PSP was made for the purpose of being the cool gamer who did other stuff and could socialise while beating the other guys brains in over wireless.

So, I think SoulCalibur will be good for the PSP even though I didn't like it's big screen version. It's a game that has such a weak storyline that you are almost arbitrarily forced into playing multiplayer. Making it the perfect partner for the PSP.
