Sega Not Giving Up on Core Wii Games After All

Sega [http://www.sega.com] says reports of the demise of its support for core game development on the Wii have been greatly exaggerated.

Sega's gamble on publishing core games for Nintendo's famously family-friendly Wii console with releases like mismatch [http://www.sega.com/madworld/] with the Wii audience," and that people who wanted to play core games would generally do so on a 360, PS3 or PC.

But apparently he didn't mean quite what we thought he meant, because in new comments to IndustryGamers [http://www.industrygamers.com/news/wii-core-still-important-to-sega-says-mike-hayes/] he reiterated Sega's support of the Wii across all age ratings and described those earlier statement as "erroneous."

"There's a viable market there. Is it going to be as big as the Teen or Mature market that exists on the Xbox 360 or PS3 platforms? Certainly not," he said. "Is it viable, because the cost of development on the Wii is significantly less than those other platforms? Then, potentially the answer is yes."

That position actually echoes Tournament of Legends [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93856-Sega-Can-Take-More-Risks-On-The-Wii], a fighting game for the Wii scheduled for release next month, have been drastically cut back in order to get the game under the T (Teen) rating wire, rather than the M (Mature) rating it was originally looking at.

Hayes acknowledged that the Wii will always be first and foremost a platform for casual games, but insisted that there was room for core games to flourish as well. "I still say there's an opportunity for titles in that more edgy genre," he said. "You're right that Wii is such a phenomenon that it caught many people off guard when it first came out, and I still think it continues to surprise with the software numbers it can notch up on appropriate titles."

In spite of the slow sales of The Conduit, a sequel is on the way; The Conduit 2 is currently scheduled for release in fall 2010.

Still, the company may be hedging its bets: Levels of blood and gore in Tournament of Legends, a fighting game for the Wii scheduled for release next month, have been drastically cut back in order to get the game under the T (Teen) rating wire, rather than the M (Mature) rating it was originally looking at.
This might be the ESRB's doing...again.
But at least they aren't quitting. Now that The Conduit 2 will have Splitscreen as well as online multiplayer

I'm down for more Madworld-esque titles, but why a Conduit 2? The first one really wasn't anything special, failed to be even as mediocre as they hoped, and could hardly stand up on its own as an actual game, let alone a fun game. No coherent story, no sense of why we were doing things, and no real sense of isolation despite being horribly alone. Maybe if they get rid of those annoying ceiling pods, develop a decent story that would explain why only your mystical randomly-picked up weapons can stop these things, and put other humans in so that we stop assuming they all went poof, then maybe it might be up the the mediocre standards of other consoles. Though, maybe we'll get another House of the Dead: Overkill to merrily guffaw our way through. Speaking of, there is that new Guitar-based House of the dead...

Sega is really just allergic to making money. They should at the very least also be developing these titles for the Xbox and PS3.

The Wii isn't total shit. And its mostly thanks to SEGA. And Nintendo. And Capcom. But more SEGA, imo.

I'm proud to own mine, even if Okami is totally misreading my movements for the paintbrush today. I just started over an hour ago. :) Haven't played it since the PS2.

Yay, I genuinely enjoyed Madworld and House Of The Dead: Overkill, so it's nice to see they're keeping the 'mature' (because blood, tits and swearing is so becoming of mature adults).

Hell, they might ever make the Conduit 2 good this time. I'm not giving up hope!
It looks promising. I'm reading the article in Nintendo power and they are still using the same engine but with a new art direction.

Read above. Hopefully they ditch the friend code thing. That way...less hackers.

I love house of the dead:Overkill. I thought the use of swearing seemed really childish though.

Why, nintendo is paying them just fine I guess. They're not stupid, they have a businessplan.

Anyway, it's nice to see some hardcore stuff coming to Wii after all. To bad it's a StreetFighter-like.

I am seriously interested in Monster Hunter Tri though...

@Sega personally: Make MadWorld 2, like MadWorld, but with more options to kill. Not just 12 different types of signs and 3 types of spikeracks...

It's good to hear that Sega still has confidence in the Wii. I'm not sure why it is that Tournament of Legends is the game to inspire such confidence, but who knows? It might be cool (I have my doubts).

Madworld was a crappy game. It looked great but the gameplay was crappy. For a good motion brawler see No More Heroes.

Loved House of the Dead, highly recommended. Did not play Conduit but I'll give it a try.

Well, I will certainly give them props for not leaving when the going is tough. I just hope they make the right decision...nothing wrong with making games for Wii, but, there just isnt the market for what they want to make

Really, this is just getting..

Xbox360 + PS3 = Hardcore demographic, trying to aim at the casual user

Wii= Casual demographic, trying to aim at the hardcore demographic.

What's this about huh? It seems the world is upside down down there.
In the end...all three want $$$$$$$. Strange huh?

I think they have to understand that appealing to core gamers does not necessarily mean you need gratuitous amounts of violence and blood.

In my opinion, Mario Galaxy appeals to core gamers as much as Super Mega Death Game 3: The Bloodening. Hardcore (at least to me) means you simply want fun and challenging gameplay. Super monkey ball is a HARDCORE game, for instance. Or more precisely, that you're looking for a long and rich game experience which you'll invest many hours into.

I never bought MadWorld, only played it at a friend's house and while it was enjoyable, the whole time I was sitting there thinking it would be so much better if it was on the 360 or PS3. Sega, you can't use money as an excuse. Yes it's cheaper to develop for the Wii, but many more people will buy your harcore games for the 360 and PS3 so you will make back the investment and then some.
