Left 4 Dead 4 Free 4 24 Hours

For 24 hours, Steam is giving PC gamers free, unlimited access to Left 4 Dead.

In a push to get the last 12 people who haven't played Left 4 Dead onboard, Steam has decided to give their massively successful game away to anyone who wants it. For 24 hours that is. The promotion, called "Freaky Free Friday" will allow Steam users to download the entire game for free and play it for 24 hours before it becomes locked, at which point gamers will have to cough up the cash to continue playing.

The free play offer conveniently coincides with the recently released Survival Pack DLC which is included in the free 24 hour version. The official announcement from Steam's site:

"Beginning Friday at 12:01 am GMT, the PC version of Left 4 Dead will be available for a free 24-hour trial via Steam. The free trial will include access to the recently released Survival Pack DLC, which introduces a new multiplayer game mode and two additional Versus campaigns. Those who wish to give L4D and the Survival Pack a try may now pre-load everything needed to play with no obligation to purchase."

In keeping with their recent business plan, Valve is leaning heavily on its big time DLC to bring new modes and gameplay to their series. This well-engineered DLC keeps titles fresh and exciting for players who have already purchased them while offering even more incentives for those on the fence. Valve's long term support for their franchises is a breath of fresh air in an industry where DLC is usually seen as a way to chisel extra cash out of gamers. Then again, that horse armor looks like it's solid gold.

Meh, I'm over Left 4 Dead. I used to play it all the time in a net cafe in philippines when I was there.. 5 months ago. I know they released new stuff, but done it once, done it a hundred times. Plus I dont miss the headaches from hours of non-stop gaming in the dark with zombies jumping out at you and yelling at your teammates across the room

Preloading it right now. I couldn't get to play it too long before release, as few people played it... Hopefully it will go faster than UT3 weekend.

Well, thats my Friday accounted for. Never seriously considered buying it before, as I very rarely play online multiplayer games like this. Suppose I'll see if a few hours of playing it will change my mind. Good move on Valves part to draw in the indecisive cheap-skates like me.

I guess trying can't hurt, probably not going to get a better opportunity later.

I'll probably try it out, makes me wish I had a mic though.
You dont really need a mic, and I'm still to find people that annoy me for not using mic.

I agree. A mic is nowhere near as necessary as you might think. I really like the whole voice-clip prompt thing they did when you hover over a certain object or enemy. I think it works really well.

I played it a little on the 360 but I'd rather play it on the PC. It's just that, after one night, I don't think I'm going to want to own it, even on the PC. I didn't find it terribly engrossing.

I lost interest in L4D when it was taken off the Orange Box
When was it ever part of the Orange Box?

Anywho...dang you Valve. I'm trying to save money here. You know, weather the economic storm and all... How am I supposed to do that when you keep enticing me with offers like this?

I demand that everyone try out this game while its free. When it first released, I happened to be sick with a flu like illness and was home sick for an entire week. I racked up 120 hours of steam game time over the first 2 weeks of L4D release date. I never play online multiplayer in any game. This game is different that other online, or even offline multiplayer games. Its awesome.

Well I'll have to concede it's a clever marketing strategy, or at least it would be if you could download it a week in advance before the servers became crammed with people desperate to download it.

2-3 days not enough?

The game took me less than 1 hour to download...

Also during the week Left 4 Dead has 40% discount.
