Webcomic Contest Winner "Critical Miss" Now Live

With over 360 entries in our first ever Webcomic Contest, one stood out amongst the rest. A new "Critical Miss", previously "Out of Tens", will be published every Tuesday and Friday.

Beginning today, "Critical Miss", winner of The Escapist Webcomic Contest, will be available exclusively on The Escapist. Previously known as "Out of Tens", "Critical Miss" revolves around the intrepid heroine, Erin Stout, as she begins working for one of the biggest game review sites on the web. Thinking it would be fun, Erin quickly discovers the life of a popular games journalist is not all it's cracked up to be. Caught between an absurdly corrupt boss and a savagely opinionated readership, she is forced to choose between her journalistic principles and her desire to not live in a cardboard box. While life swirls around her, she still finds the time to sneak away for an occasional round of videogames.

Check back every Tuesday and Friday, as Erin begins her escapades in "Critical Miss", only at The Escapist. The first comic is now live, so click here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comics/critical-miss/7560-Critical-Miss-1]!

I still like the old title better. "Out of Tens" sounds more like a reviewer comic. "Critical Miss" sounds like an RPG. Bit it's not my choice.

I liked the old title too, but the pun is sorta clever.

Critical Miss = gaming term.
And she's a critic, so a Critical Miss.

Two men make comic about lady, no good idea. Project fantasies, confuse boys to think women like that.
Manly Guys Doing Manly Things, an entry that didn't make the cut (but still continues on thepunchlineismachismo), is made by a woman. I know she isn't making normal people, but if the baddest mother f*ckers can be made by a woman, I think two guys can manage a comic about a lady (without the fantasy projection hopefully).

lol.... Also kinda funny, since my entery to the escapist was called "Critical Miss". I now need a new name If I ever get my comic out there. They stole my comics name! lol. Kinda flattering though.

I'm sorry, but that line - while perfectly valid - is really funny when I think about this week's comic.

Oh, there's TONS of sexy fantasy projection. Let's see all the sexy and seductive ways our writing Jezebel has been depicted in the four "Out of Tens" strips:

1a) In bed. Well-dressed (for sleeping, anyway), mostly under a blanket. Frowning at the thought of getting up and going to work at a job she doesn't appear to like. Certainly the kind of cuddle bunny I'd want to wake up next to. They're just so sexy when their self-esteem is being destroyed by the corrupt company they work for! Yeah, call yourself a hack again baby, this time slower.
1b & c) Fully clothed and in a jacket. The sweet kiss of itchy wool against skin, on that one-inch strip around the neck where the jacket reaches further up than the shirt.
1d) Fully clothed. Armed with a donut. I'm sure I don't need to explain that. Heh. Hehheheheh. Heheheheh heheheh heh.

Heh.

2) In full body armor complaining about the lack of similar body armor usage from her fellow females and female analogues. Surely she's just getting rid of the competition.

3) Fully clothed. Later grows facial hair. Mmmm, razor burn.

4a) Dead and decayed down to the bones.
4b) Alive, but on fire. Mismatched socks.
Death and wardrobe issues at once! Madonna at her prime wasn't this scandalous!

Really, they're pushing all the buttons that add up to "sexy". I can't go two feet without seeing porn of fully-clothed/angry/bearded/low self-esteem/dead-or-dying women in mismatched socks.

But wait, this is the Internet I'm thinking of here. Were we talking about real-world standards? Oh, then no, nothing sexy at all.

I like it. The bro-splosion is still one of the funniest things I've read on the internet. Keep it up!

It's good to see that the Incredible Hulk is giving his opinion of webcomics now.

I had him pegged as Rorschach from the Watchmen.

You say that as though being a woman means you can't be a bad ************.

I get where the guy is coming from, though. Issues with guys writing women don't necessarily mean overly sexualized characters, I see a lot of guys try to do "girl talk" type strips and they just feel... terribly patronizing. Like, I'm not gonna go pointing fingers here, but there are a couple popular webcomics out there that I stopped reading because the stories couldn't shake the pervasive these women are definitely being written by men feeling they gave me.

That said, I am not implying by any means that men can't write convincing women. I'd say Sam Keith of the Maxx writes female characters that I identify with more than most of the ones written by other women. I think what it comes down to, if we jump on people for writing characters who aren't representative of their own demographic then no one is allowed to write about anything ever. The same argument that "men can't write women" could be used to argue that nobody should be writing characters of a different ethnic background, sexual orientation, economic status, intelligence, political standing, or any other variable like other than than their own. Variety is the spice of life, I figure it's best to give people the benefit of the doubt and let them prove whether they can write their chosen subject matter or not.
