Remedy Recommends You Get Heavy Rain

Remedy probably wants you to buy Alan Wake today, but it's cool with you buying Heavy Rain too.

Remedy Entertainment finds itself in an odd position: Its psychological thriller Heavy Rain [http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=76175] - they're both exclusives to the Xbox 360 and PS3, respectively, they're both heavily story-driven, noir-esque thrillers - but it doesn't think that the two games are anything alike.

Speaking with Destructoid [http://www.destructoid.com/remedy-anybody-who-hasn-t-played-heavy-rain-should-do-so-173870.phtml], Alan Wake writer Mikko Rautalahti discussed the comparisons, and whether or not Remedy felt pressured to "beat" the unusual PS3 title.

"I don't think comparisons [to Heavy Rain] are motivated by what the game actually is - it's just because we're an Xbox 360 exclusive title," said Rautalahti. "I do feel a certain degree of pressure, because it often feels like there are expectations that simply don't have anything to do with the actual game we're making. I mean, the games are almost completely dissimilar. The game mechanics are different, the pacing is different, the storytelling is different, the setting is different, the premise is different."

"I can't believe that anyone would bother to seriously make this comparison if either one of these games was a multiplatform title."

That said, Rautalahti doesn't think Heavy Rain is a bad thing to be compared to. "[W]hile we're on the topic, I have to say that I loved Heavy Rain. It's a great experience, and I think anybody who hasn't played it should play it, if only because it does things in its own way without compromises or excuses, and that's always a welcome change of pace in this industry."

It's nice to hear such words of praise from one developer to another. Hey, maybe both games could be good!

Oh wait, are [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/7524-Review-Alan-Wake].

Well, so far, so good with Alan Wake. And from the little I've played of Heavy Rain, that was good.

LET'S SUPPORT THESE GAMES!

Can I just ask: if Heavy Rain is supposed to be an emotionally-engaging and plot-driven story, what's the point in getting it when everyone's says it's got more plot-holes than actual plot? Oddly reviews have been largely positive, and (from someone who obviously hasn't played the game) the "gameplay" doesn't seem the main reason to bother buying it.

There just been way to picky, I loved heavy rain and only spotted the plot holes after someone pointed them out to me.

Nice to see them giving credit where credit is due.

Mhhh, almost sounds like he wanted his game to be of a similar breed. Maybe that's what you get for going over development shedule and not being able to take so many risks. Anyway, would love to play Alan Wake, props to them for speaking out.

What do you do in these situations? Try it. Actually you should always try it if you're interested, no matter what people say.

Well I don't have a PS3, so I'd want more than the 2/3 games (Infamous + Uncharted 1/2) I've got my eye on at the minute to make it a worthwhile purchase.

Awhh that is so sweat of Remedy. I think I will use that money I was saving for a ps3 to buy 5 more copies of the limited edition of Alan Wake. :)

It's refreshing to see this type of gesture especially given the circumstances. I'd love to see more new IPs get this kind of reception and positive press from both the gaming media and other developers.

Heh... They were always linked in my mind as being highly story driven... Alan Wake didn't come out until today, but I'm sure as soon as I actually play it I'll see how different it is.

Interestingly enough, Heavy Rain was the game that finally made me break down and get a PS3, but I'm not convinced that Alan Wake would have been the same had I not owned an Xbox for a while already.

That's awesome, nice to see one developer supporting another's work. Having both systems I probably will end up with both games, nice to see some emotional, story based games for a change. It's a nice down to earth sort of feeling that we don't see alot of.

And now I think I want to go play Heavy Rain again.

Heh, I've always found that developers seem to be much more at ease with one another than publishers or the Big Three...

I wander why they can't learn from the likes of Remedy and just get along with one another? :(

The plot holes really only become obvious once you've finished the game. It's an emotional experience - as much fun as people make of the "Jason!" parts, it's still a gut-wrenching scene - and a unique one, due to the control scheme. It is, at times, awkwardly written and the voice acting is definitely problematic. But if you have a PS3, I'd urge you to try it. Whether or not you ultimately enjoy the game, I think you'll be glad that you had the experience.
