Ghostbusters Save NYC Library From Budget Crisis

The Ghostbusters recently made a visit to the New York Public Library, but not to save it from ghosts.

Improv Everywhere is a group of many in the New York City area that plays silly pranks on a grand scale such as overwhelming Best Buy [http://improveverywhere.com/2008/01/31/frozen-grand-central/] with people wearing blue polo shirts. They were recently approached by the New York Public Library to perform a prank that it could use to raise awareness of a massive budget cut.

1984 film Ghostbusters [http://www.amazon.com/Ghostbusters-Double-Feature-Gift-Commemorative/dp/B0009RCPY8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1276710016&sr=8-1] opened with a scene in the NYPL, so what better way to remind everyone of the library's coolness than with a stunt related to the film? Improv Everywhere sent multiple sheet-wearing ghosts into the crowded library and had them look up words in the dictionary and visit The Escapist on their laptops. Egon, Ray, Peter, and Winston enter shortly after, proton packs in tow, to vanquish the surprisingly slime-less apparitions. The prank itself isn't Improv Everywhere's best, but it was meant to serve a purpose rather than make a crazy scene.

The idea here is to have the video circulate in a viral-ish manner. The NYPL is facing a $37 million dollar budget cut, the harshest in its history, and needs a little help to save itself. Kids will have nowhere to go after school, hundreds will lose their jobs, and ghosts will roam free within the newly emptied halls of closed libraries. So, while this might not be as funny as freezing time in Grand Central Station, it is a really clever way to make people more aware of the NYPL's budget crisis.

That was really amusing. I also like the fact that they were using it to try to bring across a real message, though I doubt the people who saw it were thinking about it at the time.

This may be the best thing Improv Everywhere has done since they imitated U2 on a rooftop across the street from a U2 concert.

Wow. I was having a crappy day until I saw that. Now I'm grinning like a total moron.

Oh, Improv Everywhere, I love you so...

I must admit, the cheap ghost costumes must have looked a little dare I say...KKKish? That one black guard was pretty darn leery of them at first.
But yes, Ghostbusters+Improv Everywhere+Helping libraries= Awesome cubed. God that is a nerd thing to say.

What really would have made it even better is if the ghosts were the real Ghostbusters. Still a great video and it's for a good cause.

I thought the same thing about the sheets lol. They should have used green sheets.

OT: This was great. There seemed to be a lot of people in the library, so if it is getting decent use then what is with the cuts? Did the place have way more people before?

That's genious work! And the fact that they try to send a real message too just makes it better, not just some random shit just happening in the NYPL.

...and it had hands, that reached out for me...!

Heh, good times at the NYPL. Here's hoping they get what they need to keep those doors open.
