Indie Game: The Movie is a Real Tearjerker

[vimeo=11826980]

Ever wondered who makes those weird indie games you download for free off the net? Indie Game: The Movie gives a look into their lives.

Indie Game: The Movie [http://www.indiegamethemovie.com/] is a documentary about videogames that explores the medium through independent developers. Its creators say the idea is to take a look at "the human side of the creative process, and the connections between game and game-maker."

This short clip is a teaser for the upcoming movie and focuses on Edmund McMillen, whose past games worked on include Aether, Gish, and Braid. His current project is Super Meat Boy [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98595-Super-Meat-Boy-Coming-to-XBLA-This-Year], a platformer where players must help a cube of meat save his girlfriend.

McMillen talks about his childhood and how part of it led to his creations as an independent game developer. The short clip itself emphasizes to me how independent games can be more about self expression and emotion than making a buck. More developers are planned to be in the final product, but none have been announced yet.

James Swirsky and Lisanne Pajot of Kickstarter page [http://www.blink-works.com/]. The final product is planned for release in Spring 2011.

Nice that the world is interested in the lives of us indies. Most people just see a quick download and a small game but often a lot of life energy goes into making these games. Unlike the production line mentality of larger dev studios.

That does spark up some emotion. I'm going to see this when it comes out and i think a certain CEO (he knows who he is) should go see it as well.

Holy shit. The guy is really cool. I used to draw really, really wierd shit when I was small. Much much worse than what he was doing, but it never isolated me. My friends loved it too.

Anyway, I'd love to see the movie.

That was the same with me, but I knew the reason why I drew the stuff I did. It was all about telling the teachers and faculty to go f*** themselves and basically getting the biggest reaction out of them I could. I went to a Catholic school and I would draw things like vampires under a crucifix drinking the blood of Jesus, space wars against God, things like that. Even as far back as second grade I had teachers telling me how well I drew but then tell me what to draw, I guess it was my way of rebelling against being told what to draw when I wanted to draw Spider-Man fighting Batman and the Green Goblin.

Excellent teaser, looking forward to seeing the full thing. Good to see something purely focussing on the lovely people behind indie games.

So much more heart in indie titles than high-budget mainstream ones.
