New Back to the Future Games Appear With Flame Trails

The movie franchise that introduced the world to the damage a sports almanac can do is returning in a new videogame series.

Jurassic Park isn't the only classic property Telltale Games has signed a deal to revive in videogame form [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101210-Sam-Max-Team-Tackles-Jurassic-Park]. The episodic adventure game developer is also bringing back a franchise that's much closer to my heart: Back to the Future.

Don't know what Back to the Future [http://www.amazon.com/Back-Future-Complete-Trilogy-Widescreen/dp/B00006AL1E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1276194730&sr=8-1] is? I feel very, very sorry for you. It's a series of three movies released in the late 1980s starring Michael J. Fox as fun-loving time traveler Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd as wacky DeLorean time machine inventor Dr. Emmett Brown. They're must see movies for every human being.

It turns out that Telltale's deal with Universal for Jurassic Park [http://www.amazon.com/Jurassic-Park-Adventure-Pack-World/dp/B000BCE918/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1276194760&sr=1-1] is really a two-title deal that includes Back to the Future. This means that the company will be developing a new episodic adventure game series that will add what Telltale is calling "compelling new content" to the Back to the Future universe.

They'd just better get it right. Hoverboards don't work on water, Telltale, please remember that. We'll also be expecting a mini-game where we play as Biff and smack McFly on the head while saying: "Hello... McFly?!"

Back to the Future is a very popular retro franchise that has sadly been absent from the modern remake train, so this could be the most amazing videogame announcement I've heard of since sliced bread. Telltale plans to have the first episode of Back to the Future ready to go in winter 2010. Hopefully it won't be late for school and have to hitch on the back of a pickup truck.

"What?"

"Never mind..."

I'm excited to play this, what if it has multiplayer? That would be sweet...except I don't want to mess with no refer addicts...

This is great news!

Telltale are an amazing developer with true episodic game structure. I cant think of a better dev to carry such a franchise.

I'm gonna be first in line for the pre-order.

[Small]I never really liked the movies...[/Small] *Enters flame bunker*

Still, the games might be interesting. Though, as movie games go there's not much hope.

This game better feature some serious shit, or I'm not going to be pleased...

In all honestly I'm a bit weary, I mean it sounds great on paper... or rather in my head as I read it off my monitor...
But really I don't think movies like the Back to the Future trilogy really suit themselves well to video-games...

I mean we know how most video-games based on movies usually end up?
And even when they're treated as spiritual sequels like Ghostbusters it turns out pretty disappointing...

I guess I'll just have to wait and see...

Or build a time machine...

Now I have the urge to watch the movies...

Telltale made an experiment with time travel based gameplay in the last Sam and Max episode. It worked nicely, so I'm confident they could make a serviceable game out of Back to the Future.

Awe...Awes...AWESOME!!!

I love the Back to the Future series. Great movies. Absolute gold.

If anyone hasn't seen them, they must surrender 100 cookies to appease the DeLorean God.

The movies were pretty silly although definitely fun to watch.

Video games based on established retro movie series don't do well. Look at the Ghostbusters video game. You'll just have a bunch of fanboys fanwanking the original material and saying "oooh, look how closely we're following the original movie! And yet it's not a complete copy because characters have different names!"

Shit, basically.

Way to go against my argument in the Overrated Movies topic. I am referring to this line:
"They're must see movies for every human being."

How would you make a videogame out of Back to the Future? I don't get it.

Just one question, what kind of game is it?

Will it go by the movie, or will it have the player going through different time frames then just future, 1955, and the year "Fist full of Dollars" took place on?

This will not end well.

How can you possibly translate it into a game anyway?
It's been done before. Also note where it said "new content". Fact is, Telltale has few peers when it comes to good writing and solid adventure gaming. I've high hopes.

"Hannah Montana" has also been turned into a game.

How did that turn out?

(not degrading the quality of Back to the Future here, just saying it's not fit to be a video game, it's been done before, and it's failed, just because something can technically be made into a game, doesn't mean it should be (as is the case with "Hannah Montana" (which frankly shouldn't exist in any form)))

The BttF game on the SNES, (never released in America) was pretty cool, it had the music, and marty doing backflips on a hoverboard. Cant wait for this. Between this and the Mortal Kombat remake, this is shaping up to be a good year.
