National Space Center Welcomes Gamers

Bored this weekend? Live near Leicester, England? How about taking the family to play games at the National Space Centre?

Running 9-10th May, the National Space Center [http://www.spacecentre.co.uk/home/index.htm] is devoting its entire location to "Space Invaders" [http://www.spacecentre.co.uk/whatson/specialevents/2009/SpaceInvadersMay2009.htm]. Not just the green pixelated enemies of old, but a celebration of how the journey into space has inspired a whole generation of gaming.

Whether its playing in the Electronic Arts hub [http://www.eagames.co.uk/VIP.aspx], taking on the LEGO Star Wars Challenge, or competing with 512 other players on the same screen; there's bound to be something to enjoy. Even your parents can enjoy sitting in the cafe underneath the giant rocket boosters.

There's also chance to see the Gadget Show's [http://demand.five.tv/Series.aspx?seriesBaseName=TheGadgetShow] best toy for 2009 - jOG [http://www.newconceptgaming.com/index.php?id=12] - which duplicates your own movements to your character on screen, and join the "Save the Videogame" campaign.

You might also see me there, as I'll be reporting for The Escapist. For those interested, but a bit low on funds, there's an interactive walkabout here. [http://www.bbc.co.uk/leicester/in_pictures/360_panoramas/national_space_centre/]

The event is the result of massive public support, with one representative saying that "It's the most difficult event we've ever put on."

I was gooing to say something about the mismanagement of government funds, but somehow this actually seems like vaguely appropriate social commentary that is justifiably profitable.

Can someone please tell me what the "Save the Videogame" campaign actually is?

Exploration Road, Leicester. Just near the Technology Museum and down the road from Abbey Park.

Follow the Brown Rocket signs from the M1.

I'll make sure I get lots of pictures for you :)

As usual, nobody in Britain knows about even half that stuff that exists here.
