Pachter: PS3 Sales to Grow, Price to Remain the Same

Analyst Michael Pachter sees good things in the months ahead for Sony, but warns not to expect a PS3 price cut any time soon.

It's been a good year for Sony and the PS3 so far, and analyst Michael Pachter thinks that it's only going to get better. Pachter weighed in on state of hardware in 2010, and predicted that Sony would see major growth in the next few months.

"We expect PS3 sales to continue to grow significantly in 2010 (vs. 2009)," he said. "We think that PS3 sales continued to be constrained by low supply throughout May, but expect the PS3 to sell near parity with the Xbox 360 in the months ahead."

He also said that a price cut to match that of the new Xbox 360 Slim was very unlikely, as the PS3 was being sold at very close to what it costs to make: "[W]e are not convinced that Sony will cut the price of the PS3 due to continued tight supply ... a price reduction would likely trigger a loss on each unit sold (until manufacturing costs come down further)."

Pachter comments align with those of EA's John Schappert [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101714-EA-Wants-Good-Year-for-PS3], who also saw a good year ahead for the console. The new, slim PS3 and the Kevin Butler ad campaign has given Sony some real momentum, and it seems that everyone expects this to continue.

He may be right, but I've noticed Pachter talks out of his arse just as much as he makes sense... so, who knows.

Good for sony! (yeah im a total fanboy) they've done a really good job with giving the PS3 a boot up the arse and the kevin butler ads are marketing gold. why cant more adverts be awesomley funny. like one advert i saw which had a couple in a field of long grass doing generic romantic stuff and then the camera pans up to reveal a combine harvester coming towards them and then it cuts to a black screen with simply the word "fin."

Well, the man is infamous for saying some dumb shit like supporting Ubisoft's DRM, or that Rockstar takes too long making their games (For a damned good reason, I'll tell you that much), so who knows? I'm not holding my breath though.

You have to remember that Pachter talks from a financial stand point of what would make sense in the market and not what a gamer's opinion is.

Michael Pachter is an idiot and I have no idea why people are still paying attention to him. There must be other industry analysts out there. Can't we hear from some of them instead?
Pretty soon this is all going to go to his head and he'll start calling himself the "Video Game Oracle"

Sony/Nintendo/Micro$oft really needs to understand their consumer base. They're constantly looking at the financial and control side of the business without realising that they're living purely off the fickle nature of their fanbase.

Treat your fanbase well and they may pull stunts like the L4D2 debacle, but they'll still stay with you.

...Why would they do another price cut? The PS3 is not trying to cut prices to match the 360, the 360 was following the PS3's slimming and price cuts. As it is, $299 isn't an unreasonable price for what the PS3 offers. Good job Pachter, on being a total ponce, and completely missing that the PS3 did a price cut first.

It's not like it's expensive anymore, so I don't see why people would really be expecting a price cut...

The general trend i've noticed over the past several years is that the analysts seem to agree that ps3 dominance is perpetually just around the corner, and the same analysts always agree that the wii has sold its last unit. Microsoft seems to be doing quite well just keeping on with their keeping on.

Last i heard was they were already losing money for each console sold.
This is typical of most consoles historically, until the wii, and apparently the other manufacturers are declaring profit per unit now.

Wait, WHAT THE FUCK!?

When the PS3 originally came out, they justified the $600 price tag by claiming that because of the insanely powerful hardware and Blu-Ray, they were ALREADY losing money on each console!

Now, a few price cuts later, and they're admitting they STILL aren't selling it at cost?

(before you go, "HOW WOULD THE MAKE ANY MONEY IF THEY SELL IT AT COST IDIOT!?" The answer is with the games)
