Way Cooler Than Hopscotch: Mario on the Sidewalk

Chalk lines are a thing of the past, now that Super Mario Bros. can be played on a sidewalk.

What do you do when you have both a high-end projector, a motion-tracking system, and just a little too much free time? There are certainly a lot of possibilities, but one digital artist created an interactive version of Super Mario Bros. that he projected on a local sidewalk and wall.

<a href=http://vimeo.com/surfap>Andreas Heikaus (better known as "Surfap" on Vimeo) created this video with both a projector and a tracking system, though the details of the setup haven't been revealed. To me, it almost looks like the game footage was inserted after the initial video was shot because the colors are so bright and crisp. That said, it also looks really slick.

Heikaus is clearly talented at what he does. His <a href=http://vimeo.com/12761004>demo reel shows a wide range of work, including another appearance of Mario Bros. on the walls of a concrete stairwell. Personally, I'd love to see the artist give similar treatment to another classic sidescroller, maybe something like the original Sonic the Hedgehog.

These mario videos just keep appearing, don't they?

But still, it's awesome. Must have taken ages.

It's nice, but there are SO many of these types of things, it's getting really old.

That is just...awesome. And imagine how long it would have taken and how easily it could have been fucked up.

Um yeah, that's not a projector. Just markers and digital overlay. Pretty obvious.
I have no ideea about these things, but you must be right, that doesn't look "interactive" at all.

It doesn't look interactive to me either. It just looks like the guy walked along the street with a camera and then took the footage and put in an overlay. The image looks too crisp and theres nothing to show anyone interacting with it.

Very much looks like a digital overlay, as opposed to a live projection. Maybe Augmented Reality?

It seems that he was playing the PAL or Brazillian version on modern hardware, as all the music and timings were marginally too fast, which is the result of playing a 50hz game on a 60hz system, if I'm not mistaken. Happens with my emulator whenever I load (e) versions of ROMs instead of (u) or (ue) versions.

I liked the video, but it would be nice to see people try other games instead of using Mario all of the time.

Maybe Metroid, sonic, or even another Mario game. I haven't seen as many Mario 3 or Super Mario World videos.

Maybe Contra or mega man. Still the video, as the title says, is way cooler than hopscotch.

I've never seen a projector that worked well in sunlight, and didn't vary in visibility between sunlight and shadow. A pretty sweet concept, but without more details, not very believable.

OK, if that's really a projection system. I want it. In my life. At all times, possibly. That's seriously the most sci-fi shit I've seen in a while, and that's always a cool thing.

Augmented Reality is generally assumed to be real-time. So I wouldn't call it that. I would just call it regular old CG. Like animating Optimus Prime with Shia in the Transformers movie.
