LucasArts Admits Star Wars Fans Have Been "Forgiving"

LucasArts Executive Producer Haden Blackman says Star Wars [http://www.starwars.com] fans have been "forgiving" over the years, admitting that many of the games based on the franchise probably haven't been as good as they should have.

There aren't many game franchises like Star Wars. On one hand, you've got The Gungan Frontier [http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dvideogames&field-keywords=%22TIE+Fighter%22&x=8&y=17&ih=22_1_2_0_0_0_0_0_0_1.33_404&fsc=-1]. The range of genres bearing the legendary name is all over the map and so too is their level of quality, which Blackman admits has been a problem.

"Star Wars fans have been forgiving over the years," he said in an interview with MCV [http://www.mcvuk.com/news/40080/Force-Unleashed-II-licensing-push]. "But we don't take that for granted. We are so paranoid about tarnishing Star Wars. We want to make every game as good as possible, but it doesn't always work out that way."

He hopes, however, that it will "work out that way" for The Force Unleashed 2 [http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dvideogames&field-keywords=%22The+Force+Unleashed+II%22&x=0&y=0&ih=2_1_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_1.106_85&fsc=-1], the sequel to the 2008 release that made choking a guy by pointing at him look like something you could train your dog to do. "We see Force Unleashed as a big Star Wars event," Blackman said. "We feel like it is a genuine part of the Star Wars lore and it continues the saga. So licensing is fully behind it and we are doing most of the stuff you would expect from a major Star Wars launch."

"We definitely know that people who never played a Star Wars video game before decided to get Force Unleashed because they read the graphic novel or the book, and wanted to see how it played out in the game," he continued. "And we've seen those who own the game buy toys and books, too."

Yet Blackman apparently has more faith in the power of the Lucas marketing machine than in the game itself and was oddly reluctant to predict that it would be a hit with fans. "The Force Unleashed 2 is a better game," he said. "Whether it review or sells as well, I have no idea."

I never figured out why people hated The Force Unleashed. Besides the Star Destroyer (which actually took it down a whole letter grade for me, it was so bad) I thoroughly enjoyed the game. Since I haven't played the last couple God of War games, I'm not even that burned out on quicktime events, so I enjoyed the boss fights very much.

Yeah, it's not like they had any really good SW franchises that they just haven't carried on with...

[small]
KotOR (as good as TOR looks, I'd take a proper KotOR 3 any day)
Jedi Knight (I mean, where the FUCK has is it gone?!)
Battlefront (Pandemic had all that work on it, yet they've scrapped all work on it now)

Well, it's nice to see that a company like Lucasarts can recognize that it needs to work harder. But you know what this sounds like to me? "Pardon our dust".

Why do Lucas Arts sound so lacking in confidence? It's not reassuring. He says "Yeh the game's alright, dunno if it will sell though LOL", at least that's how I read it. I'll probably rent it if I decide to get it near the launch date, but if I wait and see it for myself, I may buy it.

Apology accepted, LucasArts.

But seriously, it's nice to hear that they realise that quite a few of their games have been less than stellar. They have given us some great ones though, so I suppose it's mostly forgivable.

I agree with LA, but I wanted to recommend them something:

Stop milking the SW franchise. We have got just too many games already that they are becoming stale.

I want the old LA, the one that made Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle and every excellent game they have made and not being tied up to the SW franchise.

Yeah, these guys are almost becoming the M. Night Shyamalan of gaming and they need to knock it the hell off.

Maybe they could have a game where your enemy is Jar Jar. Or just a bonus level. I would give that game 10, regardless of everything...

I loved the Force Unleashed until the later levels.

Force shields? Really? I can pull a Star Destroyer out of the sky... but I can't pull this person because he has some tiny shield? I'm done... *Throws disc out window*

I wouldn't say "forgiving" so much as "we already paid for it, so now we're hosed after realizing it sucks". Big difference. However, I, for one, loved the force unleashed. Looking forward to the sequel, despite them taking the George Lucas route of how it's continuing, and after how the last one ended...

BTW, Lucasarts fellow. You couldn't tarnish the Star Wars name any more than Lucas already has. At least, I'd hope not.

I am not forgiving, SWU was a cheap action game and the prequels still suck, hell the only thing worth while from Lucas in the past few years is maybe the clone war adventures cartoon show?

You know, whenever people complain about Blizzard games giving too little content or give other ridiculous statements I think about games like TFU.

The same game sells twice basically. Within about 3-4 years you see two TFU titles. The first one being called "TFU unstable Beta" while the other one is "TFU the actually final product".

And the worst thing is, the people complain about the first installment and call it shitty but then praise the developer for immediately bringing out a sequel that is what the first game was supposed to be.
"Oh gosh Lucas Arts you probably fix all the flaws I encountered in the first game. God bless you! Now I just gonna pay another 60-70 bucks as you deserve it!!"

Same with Assassins Creed.

When you bring sequels out that quickly one after another at least make sure the original game was more than a half baked Beta version. For example I have nothing against an early Dead Space 2 as the first installment was awesome already.
