Sometime in the 1990's, I had a demo disc with a really good RTS. My HDD was only 500MB, so I had to delete a few things to make space for it. I lost the disc when it "exploded" in the cd drive. I was careful when putting cd's in their bays ever since.
In the RTS, you start off by choosing who you are human or like 5 different aliens. You then place this spaceship on a area. You start off with limited resources and a contruction truck, with which to build an oil drill and oil refinery to be able to build roads and power vehicles.
My PC was very basic, so I'd run out of my 128KB memory some place in the beginning.
I read this thread ( http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.383041-1990s-RTS-game-I-remember-playing-but-I-forgot-the-name?fbfirst=1#15138569 ), and the initial writer seemed to have his question answered.
I also checked out the length thread ( http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.166417-Old-Games-you-remember-playing-but-cant-remember-the-name-of ) and wished I could search it.
I don't remember the name of the demo disc. It could have been PC Gamer, PC Zone, PC Mag or the likes, but it was definitely in the 90's. It was not Starcraft or any C&C. It was out before Win 2000 came to the market.
I have search many sites, like ( http://www.oocities.org/siliconvalley/park/2982/dload.html ) and ( http://www.rtsguru.com/games/ ) and come empty. I may even have passed it because screen shots were not available or not what I vaguely remember.
